The added revenue is coming from increased oil production and building on the part of oil Last week's announcement by the State Tax Commission that the assessed valuation of Duchesne county has jumped to $151 million from $61 million in one year will surely bring calls for a lower mill levy. We believe there should be little, or no reduction, in the county mill levy. Duchesne county government already has the second lowest mill levy in the state, and the total mill levy assessed county-residentfor all purposes is lower than in 19 of the 29 companies. In fact, 80.08 per cent of the valuation taxes will come from oil companies, utilities, mining, and transportation interests. Certainly we should not make it a practice to increase taxes so as to take advantage of the oil industry, but right now they enjoy one of the lowest mill levies in the state. No oil company will hesitate to leave this area if better or cheaper sources of energy are found. While they are here depleting the natural of resources Duchesne county they should not also be treated to a reducted s counties in the state. This county has some very pressing needs. The school district, for instance, has had to build, expand, or improve the physical facility of almost every school in the county in the past three years to meet enlarged enrollments. Roosevelt elementary alone cost almost a million dollars. The county in the past has been unable to build all the roads needed, mainly because of a lack of money. The added tax from the increased money assessment will help build and pay for both roads and schools. The increased valuation will not increase the taxes of tax rate. Good schools and roads benefit permanent residents and the oil industry. The point is this, wre have a low tax structure in the county now and many pressing needs. Let us get our road system in order and our schools paid off, then if the oil boom proves to be a bust later on a reduced population will not be saddled with paying for bonded schools and poor roads. In converting from paper documents to tape, taxpayers may select one of the two reporting plans available. Under one plan the same tape file can be used to fulfill reporting responsibilities to SSA and IRS. The second plan is designed for reporting directly to IRS. Many state income lax and employment security agencies accept one or the other of these plans, and in some instances both. Thus taxpayers can achieve further savings, since the same tape format can be used and State) for (Federal multiple requirements. reporting Tax reporting switches from paper to tape The number of firms switching from paper to magnetic tape for reporting tax information to the Internal Revenue Service has jumped nationwide from 591 to 15,500 in just 9 years, Roland V. Wise, District Director for Utah said today. Most taxpayers changing to magnetic tape, Mr. Wise said, cite such advantages as reductions in paperwork, and in storage facility and handling and shipping requirements. Economies are possible because reels of magnetic tape can contain the equivalent of 30,000 or more paper documents, he said. Taxpayers who wish details on making the switch from paper to magnetic tape reporting should contact Mr. Hilton at in the IRS Salt Lake city office. The IRS will provide free information and technical assistance, he said. 524-586- July 14, 7 p.m. At West Elementary School 722-403- 2 of the mainstreet meeting We need to Duchesne. of businessmen some resolve and problems get together and decide on projects to help economic growth in our area. 4.
