THE EDITOR SLIGHTLY SUPERIOR" Dear Editor: I feel that the people of Utah, particularly the 1st District, should be aware of the complacent attitude of their representative in Washington. D.C., Mr. Gunn McKay, on the most vital issue of America's defense. I shall illustrate Mr. McKay's by comparing a statement to statement by Major General George Keegan, currently Executive Vice President of the U.S. Strategic Institute, and retired Chief of Air Force Intelligence. He is recognized as one of the nations foremost military experts on the Soviet Union. Mr. McKay's statement in a letter: While there are those who think that the Soviets have established a superior military position, most experts agree that the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. are roughly equivalent in strength, with the U.S. in a slightly superior position. Mr. Keegans statement in an interview: There is virtually no area in which the traditional free world superiority, or superior ability to defend itself, has not been eroded seriously, has not been surpassed by Soviet weaponry and forces. As these trends continue, the Soviet accretion of power is going to be so overwhelmingly superior that I fear for the safety, not only of the Republic, but of all the other nations of the free world. How much should Big Brother take, and from whom? Its an issue that neither or liberals so-call- ed conservatives agree on even among themselves. Since dont even pretend to know what 1 motivates most liberals. I will try to deal with the conservative many viewpoints on this question. Some conservatives want no compulsory taxation: want it all to be voluntary. Evidently, these people still believe in the tooth fairy. Others believe there ought to be no income tax: or, at least, no personal income tax. Others, no property taxes. Some think sales and excise taxes should carry the whole load. etc. This writer believes that there is no one form or source of taxation which could possibly be fair to all citizens. Some people have great wealth and little or no income: others, vice versa. I believe taxes should c o m e from various directions and sources, so everybody will pay his fair share. I think a fair and productive tax program would he along the following lines: 1 . We even let slave state nations ship billions of dollars worth of merchandise into our country every year at prices our industry cant compete with. For instance, our shoe industry is now in the doldrums because of foreign imports. Why in the world would we actually promote imports which put millions of our workers out of work, and make it illegal to ship cigarettes from one state to another? Many of us are opposed to international free trade on the assumption that it would lower the standard of living in our country, since American business could not compete with countries which labor is paid a small fraction of what our laborers make North Carolina is not putting New York out of business.
