News items Must Be Fully Documented. We want to print By Dr. Howard B. Kershner ONLY THE TRUTH! New Muscle for Inflation d The steelworkers have gained a wage increase of 30.8 percent over the next three years. This will, of course, become a pattern for other industries. Other workers will claim they are entitled to as much as the steelworkers. Not all of them will get it, but that will become an average pattern. If wages are to go up ten percent a year, prices of goods and services will continue to advance in about the same proportion. Prices may lag somewhat if industry has sufficient capital to keep on improving its equipment so that more can be produced in the same amount of time. This might accountjor two or three percent a year. If it does, a ten percent advance in wages would result in a seven or eight percent advance in prices. It. is doubtful, however, if this ratio can be maintained, for capital is becoming scarce. Our industries used to be financed by about of bonds, notes, of common stock, and one-thior bank loans. As capital has grown scarce and more difficult to obtain, the tendency has been to increase the bonds and bank loans and decrease the amount of of common stock. The ratio is now about of bonds or loans. This the latter to about in itself is a dangerous situation. It increases the interest load our industries must carry and makes them more vulnerable to any reverses or slowdowns. But going back to bedrock principles, why should we think we are improving our situation by increased wages, paralleled by rising prices? If we would forego the wage increases, price increases likewise would cease, and all of us would be able to maintain current living standards. It would not mean sacrifice for any. But if we continue to force wage advances, followed by comparable price increases, thereby making necessary deficit spending and further increases in the quantity of money, we shall eventually drive the purchasing power of the dollar down to zero. At that point, wage increases will mean nothing. Two zeroes are worth no more than one. We will have destroyed our economy, squandered the accumulated wealth of our people and probably made ourselves a prey to the dictator with his socialism or communism. That will mean great suffering and loss of our freedom and two-thir- ds rd one-thi- two-thir- rd ds NORTHWOOD INSTITUTE Economics Department The JU Independent Salt Lake City, Utah The Utah Independent Is published by the Utah Independent each T ues-da- y at 57 East Oakland Avenue, Salt Lake City, Utah 84115. Wed do better for our own safety if we would dispose of a few in the high echelons of our government instead, We allow Soviet flat bottoms to travel our inland waterways, in the name of friendship and commerce, even reaching Chicago. Soviet ships have been sighted in the Gulf of Mexico within 50 miles of our coast. We brazenly give the Soviet Union the Mt. Alto Veterans Hospital in Washington, D.C. It has a beautiful view of the home, many of our federal buildings, the airport and the river, et al, a wonderful location for surveillance and espionage. We wish to be on amicable terms with Fidel Castro (Cuba), so our industrialists will be content with business ventures, and the U.S. gain one more give-m- e! We have removed strategic sites in the extreme south and other areas of our country. We have knowingly allowed our congressmen to cut back on missiles of all kinds, including defense from air and submarines. We have refused audiences to majors, generals and men of like caliber, who have been trying to warn the people of impending disaster if our course is not changed. Even indicted them. Much of that aid has gone to the poor, over-populate- d, hungry nations, and most of them are now worse off than ever. Perhaps the best thing we could do for them lately is to suggest that they spend more time ploughing and less time procreating. What right has any person got to produce cant feed? BE PREPARED, A GOOD MOTTO It is entirely possible that in only a few years the United States of America undergoes a desperate depression, famine, revolution, a miliary coup, and dictatorship. There would probably be a great exodus from the cities, and some exodus from America itself, before and during the turmoil. There are already many millions of aliens here an estimated 8 million are and in a civil war illegal most would be enemies.
