Show The Paper That Dares To Take A Stand August 25, 1977 The Utah Independent Page 5 A THE SCOTT REPORT BIGGEST Washington: recently received a shocking letter from I .os I TAX Angeles Superior Court Carters energy program represents the most significant increase in the middle-clas- s tax Americans burden in our nations history. That is the blunt warning contained in an analysis piepared for the Heritage Foundation and now circulating among members of Senate Committees considering the House passed version of President Carters energy package. The total cost of the program, if finally approved by Congress, will be S337,3 10,000,000 over the next eight years. This is a staggering S5,390 for every family. Other less conservative analysis indicate that the cost for the average middle-incom- e family could run to as high as 52,000 a year, or total S 6,000 over the next eight years. Titled Economic Impact of Carters Energy Program, the well documented analysis reveals that 1 much of the Judge Harry Peetris. lie was pleading for mercy mercy from California's current Paul Scott President Carter administration's highly touted energy program consists of tax intended either to programs encourage or discourage some sort of activity in the energy area. It notes: While the administration has repeatedly emphasized that the taxes will be rebated, the fact is that in many instances they will not be returned. ...The simple fact is that the majority of the tax revenues under the Carter plan will wind up in the federal coffers and quite possibly eventually be used for social programs. A graphic illustration of this is the administrations claim that all of its crude oil tax will be rebated. In fact, only 759?; will be, leaving S40.8 billion out of 5163 billion to go into the general treasury and for administrative costs. Other costs associated with ON COURSE DILEMMA PROGRAM IN HISTORY By JUDGES sentencing laws. You 540.8 billion cost to the public. The industrial users tax will amount to 511.4 billion for the same period, and tax on utilities will come to 53.9 billion. This means that the public will pay a total of 556.1 billion dollars between 1978 and 1985 in taxes on crude oil and boiler fuel. This amounts to 5801 for every family in the U.S. and this is just the tip of the iceberg. HIKING OIL IMPORT One of the aspects of COSTS the cost of the Carter energy which has received program relatively little attention is the additional cost of potential oil. imported Based on an assumed 3 percent annual increase in the real price of imported oil (which is considered very low), the analysis states: The cost of imports for the period between 1978 and 1985 will This be fully S57.8 billion. amounts to over 5825 for every family in the U.S. Other estimates indicate that the cost could reach 51.000 for every family." the Although House succeeded in defeating the President's efforts to boost the federal gas tax by five cents a gallon, the analysis notes that another administration driveto get this tax is being mounted in the Senate and might succeed. If enacted by Congress, the overall cost to an average family would be S840 for the 1978 to 1985 period. Under the Carter proposal, gasoline users would not be allowed to deduct the cost of their state gasoline taxes as well as the federal ones. OTHER ENERGY TAXES Pointing out that the impact of the energy program taxes will raise the Carter Energy Program are the cost of thousands more difficult to identify than taxes, according to the analysis. For instance, as the nation depends on increasing amounts of imported oil, it is forecast that the U.S. will not only pay higher prices but become more vulnerable to economic dislocation as well. The estimate is that the nation will have to import at least S553 billion worth of foreign oil between 1978 and 1985. THOSE TAXES ON OIL -Here are some of the highlights in the analysis on the types of taxes and their costs to U.S. taxpayers. There arc essentially three forms of taxes on oil. The first is the crude oil tax at the wellhead, the second is the industrial users tax, and the third is the tax on utilities which burn oil. Total collections of the wellhead tax on crude oil will come to 5163 billion for the period between 1978 and 1985. Even if of other products, the analysis forecasts that these added costs to taxpayers will total 598 billion for the 1978 to 1985 period. This amounts toSl.-40- 0 for the average family. Costs of federal taxes on natural gas will amount to S44.2 billion during the eight year period or slightly over 5631 per family. Taxes on coal for the same period arc estimated at nearly S2 billion and another 510 billion will be levied against automobiles. The conversion of utilities from natural gas and oil to coal is expected to run to more than 550 billion during the next eight years. Since this cost will be passed along to consumers in higher prices, it will act the same as a new tax on utility users. How all this is going to affect the economy is still anyones guess. All that is now clear is that the energy program represents the biggest tax hike program ever discounted to account for proposed to Congress in cither questionable rebates, there still is a peace or war.- - probably wont like what Judge leetris said in his letter anymore than I did. ..but I think you might be interested in reading it. Judge Peetris told of a case which was recently heard in his court. A man was convicted of several brutal murders. The evidence was The clear-cu- t. man was criminally motivated, cold-bloode- and d completely without human compassion . So whats the problem? The man obviously deserves the death penalty or at least life in prison without parole, right? What he deserves and what he gets under our current laws are two different things. Lets look at the details of this case: This killer got started in 1966. His first victim was killed in his efforts to take over prostitution a business. The woman he killed was sitting in her living room. The killer placed a gun in her ear and pulled the trigger. Sitting on the couch this witnessing scene was the victims son. Despite the boys pleas for his life, the killer stuck a gun in the young mans ear and pulled the trigger. After all, the killer said later, he couldnt leave any eye witnesses. These two murders went unsolved for 10 years. Up until 1971 . the killer served time in prison for a parole violation. After he was released, he killed again. His victim was a cocaine dealer. Some people might think he did society a favor, but nonetheless he took another life. Our enterprising killer thought he was becoming quite adept at his craft, so much so that he decided to go professional. Now a hired killer, his fourth victim got the familiar gun in the ear. This time he fired three shots, but the woman somehow managed to live even though she remained partially paralyzed and had to walk with a cane. Not wanting to jeopardize his he professional standing, returned two months later to finish the job. This time he fired the gun in her ear and in her eye. Then, just to be thorough, he fired at the back of her head and at her heart. The killer then jokingly said, This time shes really dead. Somehow to me! thats not funny By Capt. Joe . Ferguson LETS STOP GIVEAWAY OF PANAMA CANAL By Captain Joe . Ferguson CANAL GIVEAWAY CONTRARY TO AMERICAS BEST INTEREST President Carter and his (giving them the benefit of the doubt) cohorts are determined to turn the control of the Panama Canal over to the communist-dominate- d regime of Omar Torrijos, dictator of Panama. This action would be contrary not only to the best interests of America but the desires of the people. Public opinion polls have indicated that 78 of the American people want to keep control of the Panama Canal. This poll is proof not only that the American people have more good common sense than the politicians in Washington, but that the politicians neither carry out nor respect the wishes of the people. Panamas dictator Torrijos is a proven Marxist, and the government of Panama is now communist-dominate- d since Torrijos took control as a result of a military coup. And history has proven that constant turmoil exists under communist governments. It is hardly likely, then, that any good whatsoever could ever come of giving the Panama Canal to Torrijos's ultra-liber- al regime. Sol Linowitz, Carters chief negotiator to give away the Canal, recently commented on the reason why a large percentage of the American people oppose giving away the Canal. He stated that it was because . ..those people have not had the chance to learn the facts about what is involved. That is not an error. It is an outright lie. Of course, if the American people had to rely on Carter, Linowitz or anyone in the Carter administration to give them the facts, they would surely never get them. But the truth is that many courageous conservative congressmen and conservative organizations and individuals have been workingto get the straight facts out to the people. The people have the facts and are the action of the administration. The facts are that we bought and paid for not only the construction of the Canal but for the knowledgeably opposing sovereign control, in perpetuity, over the Canal Zone. IMMEDIATE ACTION NEEDED BY AMERICAN CITIZENS There is no question that Carter and Linowitz are fanatically determined to give away the Panama Canal, even knowing that it is contrary to Americas interests and to the wishes of the American people. The only way to stop the giveaway is for us, the People, to send a message so loud and clear to all U.S. representatives and senators that it will leave Washington reverberating for years to We must give vigorous support to those come. congressmen and senators who are opposing the proposed treaty, and we must give forceful and visible opposition to Carter, Linowitz and all congressmen and senators who are supporting the treaty. If Carter and crowd are successful in giving away the Panama Canal, then will there be any stopping what they might give away in the future? Lets get busy. Most people would against the death penalty agree that this killer should came cold-bloode- d be put to death. Unfortunately, not enough legislators agree with the people. As a result of an eleventh:hour bill passed last year, coupled with the Supreme Courts ruling against the death get penalty, killers can-no- off relatively easy. Lets look at what choices Judge Peetris faced in sentencing this professional killer. The judge thought the proper punishment would be death. The court ruling trial. the killers The Supreme Court during said there was no opportunity to consider mitigating circumstances! So much for the sentence of death. The next lesser sentence would be life in prison without parole. That punishment is available for kidnapping for ransom with injury, trainwrecking with injury, and other similar crimes - but not for the crimes committed by this killer. So much for life in prison without parole. |
