Ferguson FIRES CLEARLY HOSTILE ACTION At least eight American vessels have been reported seized illegally by the Cuban government in the past few weeks. Most of them, if notall, were in international waters when the seizures occurred. The lobster boat Bounty was taken captive by Cuban gunboats firing rockets and machine guns in a sea chase. The Bounty had been returning to Key West from 30 days of fishing off Central America when it'was approached by the gunboat. The captain, Nick DeNichilo, told Miami Coast Guard by radio that he was in international waters, 15 miles from the northwest Cuban port of Jutias. The boat and crew were taken captive July 28 and released by the Cubans on the 31st. NO PROTECTION FROM U.S. GOVERNMENT The owner of the boat, Raymond Vanyo, was reportedly very bitter in his criticism of the U.S. government for not stopping the seizures of American vessels by the Communist Cubans. TheyTl say we got the boat back and now its all right, but thats not right, he said. Think of all the money, the heartache, the anxiety thats involved. Think of what those people who have peo pie on that other boat (another American boat sighted in the Cuban harbor by the crew of the Bounty) are going through right now if they even know about it. The government shouldnt allow this to happen. Vanyo said he called the U.S. State Department in Washington after learning of the release Sunday morning but got no answer. He said he then called the White House and a duty officer told him he would ...notify the proper people. It appears clear that the current administration plans to extend every hand of friendship possible toward various communist dictators around the world, but has no intention whatsoever of offering protection to U.S. citizens when attacked by the armies of these dictators. It is clear, also, that we must immediately go to work to elect a president and congress by 1980. Lets start getting the job done now so we can show some results in 1978. . pro-Americ- an The Panama Canal under the domination of the Leftist Marxist government in Panama would be, of course, a great coup for the Russians who would then control the world's most important waterway. - William Loch -- had a rebuttal on the statement of the plaintiffs attorney.... Brown also said that Judge Ritter and Phil Hansen both admitted they didn't read any of the defendant's requested instructions to the jury and that all the U.S. Attorney's instructions were accepted and given to the jury. He further stated Judge Ritter said there was no substance to his (Browns) instructions even though he hadn't read them. The most substantial instructions arc based on Garner vs U.S., Brown said. "This was decided by the Supreme Court in 1976 and without question, proves I was right in doing what I did. No date, has been set for Browns sentencing.
