McManus One Belmont, Massachusetts of measure ultimate the good worth of any nation is the way it treats its women. The laws of nature being what they are, men are equipped with superior strength and aggressiveness. And women, while inferior in these characteristics, possess the wondrous powers of childbearing and home-makin- Women in Combat! The above attitude has prevailed in the United States. But it is being attacked from many quarters today. Bad enough that fringe groups and organizations now crusade to bring women down to the status of equality with men and to get them away from the home and from childbearing. Now. we witness with horror the steady development of official plans to place women in the combat units of our nations military. A more complete reversal of natures in-- t ent and t he nat ions needs would be hard to imagine. What is it like in combat? Retired Army Brigadier General Andrew J. Gatsis spent thirty-siyears as a trained professional soldier. Speaking out against any possibility of placing females in combat, he says: "I have watched weary men moving up in the attack, in staggering columns, bending under sbggy packs, chilled in the drizzling rain, almost sapped of their strength, covered with sludge and mud, knowing all the while that many would not return and uppermost in their mind was that hojie that God would give them the courage and the physical strength to face up to their challenge. But Secretary of Defense Harold Brown wants Congress to change our laws so that women can be trained for combat. So does Army Secretary Clifford Alexander. And women are pres- ently enrolled at our service academies where the sole purpose of the training is to create combat-ready officers. Even the Marine Corps has recently placed women side by side with men at its Quantico (Va.) Officers Basic School, a combat training center which is no picnic for the toughest of men. Practical Objections Practical objections to placing women in such a circumstance are easy to find. The service academies have been forced to alter their obstacle courses be- cause women cant negotiate them; bolt springs on rifles have been changed to accommodate weaker females; the woman drive a truck is physically incapable of changing its tire; and women are woefully unable to carry wounded men on stretchers. Also, what happens when the platoon sergeant falls in love with the machine gunner? Where do you berth women on a ship? Who carries the heavy ammunition up the hill? What fate can be expected for women who happen to become POWs? Keep in mind that this whole nightmare is becoming a reality without passage of the Equal Rights Amendment, and without a draft. Should ERA pass, it would be unconstitutional not to train women for combat and not to include them in any future draft. Beyond all these practical considerations, however, wc prefer to stress the glaringly obvious fact that men and women are not equally equipped by nature. A nation whose men would send women to fight its battles would not last long. The enemy would send men. More than likely, there would never be any battle, for any nation that institutionalizes such an abuse of women has already defeated itself. !
