THE EDITOR PHONEY ENERGY CRISIS d) 1 We Must Reverse the Trend ij Alexander Solzhenitsyn has proved himself to be a wise, courageous, and very perceptive man. For many years, he has suffered severely rather than to compromise his convictions. His warning that the West will vanish from the face of the earth must not be taken lightly. It is about to happen, and it will not be long delayed if we fail to recover the beliefs and practices that made western Christian civilization great. I include Judaism and other religions insofar as they uphold the moral law of God summarized in the Ten Commandments as a part of our moral and religious heritage. Let us try to isolate some of the events that have led to the decline of the West, particularly as they have been manifested in our country. 1. We have excluded God. the scripture, prayer and the singing of the great hymns of adoration from the public schools; Christ from Christmas; the request for Gods help from the oath, and in many cases, nave largely deserted our churches. 2. The vacuum left by largely excluding religious and morally oriented literature such as the McGuffey Reader, has been filled in large part by inanities, obscenities and unmailable, unprintable and unspeakable pornography. Our children have been immersed in this slime and yet we wonder what has happened to the character of our yourtg people, so many of whom have become addicted to sex. pot, dope, alcohol, nicotine and caffeine. Furthermore, even in what we always thought was the security of the home, they are now bombarded with violence, crime, and sexual degeneracy. What they escape seeing on television, they pick up in the motion pictures. 3. Manv of our children arc not learning to read and write, which are basic to the maintenance of any type of civilization. By deserting the phonetic system of Icarn- look-sa- v in; to read and substituting the method, we have deprived millions of children of the power to read. 4. By abolishing all standards and by promoting children who cannot or will not learn, we are populating our country with illiterates. 5. By deficit financing, we have ruined our monetary system and are demonstrating the truth of Lenins statement that the way to destroy a country is to corrupt its money. The dollar is down to about 22 percent of its War II purchasing power, and is rapidly declining. The quantity of money has been increased from $36 billion at the close of World War II to $314 billion as of this writing. The proper definition of inflation is an increase in the quantity of currency. Inflation, higher wages, higher prices, and increase in debt have about kept pace with the increase in the supply of so-call- ed post-Wor- ld money.
