Letters To The Editor SigiiiTmrmirrBiiiSsBB KERSHNERS COMMENTARY Tlx Moral Foundation of the Free Market Two hundred years ago when Adam Smith promulgated the philosophy of the free market, the religion was at the heyday of its acceptance. More people believed in it, and believed in it more thoroughly and completely, than at any previous time. Christian principles dominated the thoughts and actions of the people of Europe and America from that time until the early 20th century. Based on the ethical standards flowing from the n religion, and the enthusiastic following of the philosophy of freedom in the economic activities of the people, as developed by Adam Smith, wealth increased at a rate far in excess of anything theretofore experienced by mankind throughout all Judeo-Christi- an Judeo-Christia- history. For the first time there was hope that poverty, suffering and disease might be conquered. Unheard of advances were made in what we term the flowering of Western Civilization. Beginning late in the 18th century, this unprecedented progress in the creation of wealth continued throughout the 19th century and into the 20th century. It was based upon dual foundation of the ethical principles taught by the religion in the the freedom and marketplace taught by Adam Smith and the other classical economists. Then came an age of skepticism and doubt. Faith in accepted religious principles declined. Moral standards began to disintegrate. The Ten Commandments gradually lost their hold upon the thinking of the people, and were increasingly disregarded and violated. With the crumbling of ethical ideals and religious devotion, the free market likewise began to break down. For people to live in freedom they must operate with honesty, truthfulness, fairness, integrity, and a moral stamina that rules out coveting, stealing, adultry, and sexual debauchery. When people no longer accept these ideals as rules for their conduct, the foundations for economic wellbeing also begin to crumble. Abundant production under freedom is possible only if people do not coerce one another, but are content to exchange their services on a voluntary basis, wherein each person delivers goods or services to others in response to their needs and wants, in exchange for what they offer in the marketplace, and, on terms voluntarily agreed to by both parties. Any deviation from this practice results in fewer goods and services, and, as the late master of economic thinking, Ludwig von Mises, put it, less human satisfaction. Today many pay tribute to, but do not practice, the ethical principles of our religion and the tenets of the free market economy. The principle of dealing with one another on a voluntary basis has largely given place to coercion, both on the part of government in its voluminous regulations of our economic activities and also on the part of pressure groups that force the public to do their bidding, or else.
