The Mpls. Trib. in reporting the assets of Mondale as the least affluent candidate gives the impression that in 1975 poor Fritzie and Joan scraped along on a gross income of only $61,909. The article also noted: Mondales charity contributions include such groups as the Sons of Norway and the Loyal Order of the Moose and his church. In 1975 he made $262.10 in charitable contributions. Yes, Nixons income tax payment was $298 one year while President, reports were that Reagan once paid nothing one year when having a $1 million income and that the great philanthropist Rocky sometimes pays no taxes. We peons find all this most comforting! As for Mondales $262 sacrifice, one can only say LA DE DA! How generous this man who is ever willing to appropriate the taxpayers monies by the billions to fund his congressional charitable projects (also known as fool expenditures by some of the citizenry). But when it comes to Mr. and Mrs. personal funds, they give a grand total of 262 bucks to the Sons of Norway, the Moose, all of their charities and to their church! Is there a clergyman, church layman or treasurer in America who wont join me in saying the Mondales are just ALL HEART! Charity begins at home, but should not end there. (Proverb) Big-Hearte- you are mistaken on Ronald Both parties are Reagan. Rockefeller-controlled; therefore, no genuine conservative can run for President on either party. Reagan showed his true color by his choice of a leftist as running mate. Our only hope is the American Party, the only party that truly represents the American people. More important than the Presidency is the House of Representatives which enacts all Socialist programs, and pays for them with taxpayers money. With Conservatives elected to the House, Rockefellers programs would go begging! Make a switch today, admit your mistake, and go American Party all the way. Bartell WASHINGTON, D.C. (Liberty Lobby News Service) Hair-raisistories about ng government regulations are becoming more common today as the government grows in power and influence, but a story carried recently in The SPOTLIGHT illustrates just how ridiculous and dangerous the growth has become. It has to do with food . . . something all of us need. Federal marketing orders cover the growth and distribution of food and to a large extent regulate its flow and price. Back in 1958 a former Marine captain started to work on a small California orange grove. He thrived and eventually had an investment of about $300,000. Because of the Department of Agriculture marketing orders, believe it or not, Jacques Giddens is forced to throw away at least a third of his crop of oranges every year. As he says, The law is crazv. I'm growing perfectly good food in a hungry world and throwing it away so some fat cats in Los Angeles can make a housewife pay more for her oranges in the supermarket. Heres how the marketing orders- work: Once a week, an 11 member Navel Orange Administration Committee meets to decide how many oranges can be shipped to the fresh fruit market, how many can be exported, and how many will be allocated to The men making these decisions are not growers, but. merchandisers, middle men, who act between the farmer and the market. Their quota decisions are relayed to the Department of Agriculture and a marketing order is issued. According to Giddens, they are careful to - by-produ- Billie G. Meanwhile, says Giddens, you are paying up to 60 cents a pound for oranges while Ive got 13 acres of unpicked oranges. Giddens says he has never been allowed to sell more than 65 per cent of his crop on the fresh fruit market. He could sell the remainder to the giant factories but they dont pay enough to cover picking and shipping costs. So, he has to let his oranges rot on the trees. He says he cannot pick them because once his quota is filled theres no way to store the oranges except on the trees. He cant beat the system by cutting back on production because his tonnage is based on production. To maintain his quota, says the story in The SPOTLIGHT, he has to cultivate all of his 40 acres, knowing that 13 acres of them will rot. After throwing away at least $30,000 worth' of oranges in the last five years, Giddens rebelled this season and deliberately oversold his quota by $15,000. The orange committee in Los Angeles, horrified at his action, quickly notified the Justice Department and he was haulea into court. He was found guilty and the Justice Department is currently trying to force him to pay a fine equal to the value of the oranges he sold. He can hardly be faulted for blaming the giant food firms who are successfully forcing the small, independent operator out of business, with the overt assistance of the government. The next time you pay high prices for oranges at the supermarket, remember that small orange grower out in by-prod- California who is forced to throw away one third of his crop so that the middlemen can keep the price of oranges artificially high.
