Sure enough, U.S. Customs agents, accompanied by local police and postal inspectors, seized fitun the homes of Donna Schuster and Donald Hanson assorted tablets and vials con- taining an apricot kernel extract variously referred to as Yitamin B17, Lae trile, and amygdalin. Inn: Both packages of vitamin goods had been smuggled from Mexico at the request of the U.S. Government, seized from the mails by the U.S. Government, repackaged and addressed to Mrs. Schuster and Hanson by the U.S. Government, and delivered to both addresses by the U.S. Government. Mrs. Schuster Hud not even ordered any of the goods but search warrants of her home and that of Donald Hanson had already been executed on the foreknowledge that such prohibited medicines (as Customs calls Vitamin B17) would soon be arriving. That was on December 23rd. A few days later the U.S. Grand Jury sitting in San Diego, California, indicted Mr. Hanson and Mrs. Schuster on smuggling charges. ' Just three days before the setup that is, December thirteen cars and twenty 20, 1975 agents of the U.S. Customs division Schus-ter-Hana- an were involved in the surveillance, and finally the stopping and arrests, of the occupants of two automobiles in Northern California. One car bore Rafael T. Zapata of Tijuana, Mexico. From this vehicle, Customs agents claimed, vials of Vitamin B17 (Laetrile, amygdalin) had been removed and placed in the other car, which belongs to Robert W. Bradford. Bradford was arrested along with Maria Moran, to whom agents said he had given a sum of money. Mr. Brad-for- d was on the way to San Jose Airport, from which Miss Moran was to return to Mexico. Instead she spent the rest .of 1975, and most of January, 1976, in jail indicted, along with and Bradford, for smuggling Zapata By Thomas O. Why do we need two governments for the same people? We would achieve greater efficiency and economy if we consolidate and just had one government. Thats .logical, isnt it? But, wait a minute; if that idea is carried to its logical conclusion, why do we need County government? Why not just have State government alone. Thats what Connecticut has, just a State government and planning districts. Likewise, if we go just a little further with our logic, we are able to conclude that we really do not need State governments and could get along much better with just a Of sinrle central government. course, because of distance we Anti-Apric- ot . oper-Continu- ed on page 6 THE FIFTH COLUMN WHY CONSOLIDATION? need city-coun- technically illegal in the United States. The American Medical Association, the American Cancer Society, and state boards of public health routinely damn Laetrile as quackery and pronounce its proponents, pushers, and users as either quacks or suckers. This is the reason being offered in Grand County, and it is always offered in all Metro changes in form of government, whether consolidation or mayor-counc- il form with a Metro charter. The key to Metro is always the Metro charter, which contains the general power grant of unemerated with a natural food substance that researchers in foreign countries, and some here at home, have found to be useful in the treatment of cancer. By a somewhat whimsical interpretation of its own indirect regulations, the Food and Drug Administration has made the product Laetrile the extracted, refined, crystallized, freeze-drie- d version of the chemical amygdalin in either tablet or vial form planning regions to might locate the regional headquarters closer to the people being served geographically. Could we say 10 planning regions would be about right? If we did, we would be saying exactly what the Metrocrats want us to conclude. But there are several things wrong with arriving at such a conclusion.
