Show The Paper That Dares To Take A Stand February 5, 1976 The Utah Independent Page 3 A CORNER ON PUBLIC EDUCATION IS AGGRESSION EDUCATION ' By Erma J. Christensen This is the week for positive action. Parents, grandparents, and other concerned people, lets- discuss the positive side of our rally to the side fo decent literature for Utah school children, and those in other states. There are many wise and beautiful books that would, if read by the children, present them with the view that life can be ever more abundant and rewarding. The side life as of dirty presented by last weeks review, is not the kind of life that most of us strive for, and work daily to achieve. We see some of the harshness of life daily, and we need not partake of it, and need not wallow in stories about it, as some people would have our children do. There are alternative books on the state lists, and this writer will name some of them for you.. Also here are some suggestions as to what action to take when their children tell about the awful books they have to read in school: 1 . Go to the school and ask for an alternative book, perhaps from the list herein. 2. Examine the books the child does not appreciate, bring one home and read it thoroughly so you can point out to the teacher the bad things you dont like. Take a pencil and mark through any offensive words and sentences and . send it back to school. Get your neighbors interested, tell each one to go into the class alone, pick up a book and bring it home for evidence. Perhaps if all the books disappear, the teacher will realize she is teaching from the wrong kind of texts. After class speak to the teacher again. 4. Get your neighbors to go into the class together with' you and sit in on the session. Then after class speak respectfully to the teacher and then the principal. Be kind and frie'hdly but firm and authoritarian. These are my personal recommendations. If all this fails, call us, and we will add the books to our list (above all, keep a copy , for us), and we will eventually have a showdown whenhll the chips are down, with the State Board of Education. In suggesting books for the children, choose only those that are so fine in artistry that they cast their magic spell over the child, and they become a living joy to read. The old cliche that children need horror stories to survive this modern world does not hold true it is merely brainwashing. For the child, Grimms Fairy Tales, Hans Christian Anderson Fairy Tales, Childs Garden of Verses, the Oz books, and many others. Exactly what the fairy tales do is this: They accustom the children through a clear series of fine pictures, to the idea that the LIMITLESS TERRORS have a LIMIT, that these shapeless enemies have enemies, that these strong enemies of man have enemies in the Knights of God, and there is something in the universe more mystical than darkness, and stronger than fear." (Quote from E. Merrill Root, famous author.) Besure. your child knows the Christian Hans marvelous the about Tale Andersen - -- Christcnscnj the courage to say Hes naked." The Childs Garden of Verses presents the doorway to the real world, a world of joy, of wonder, of delight that will help the future man or woman in the dark and lonely hours with the remembered sanity of the childs joy. Even John Dewey cannot pervert children whose souls are melodious with poetry of the wonder of the world the sanity of the world, and Gods creation of this great world. The duty of children is so well described in the following . verse: A child should always say whats true And speak when he is spoken to And behave mannerly at table, At least as far as he is able." at Who hath smelt wood-smok- e twilight? Who hath heard the birch log burning? Who is quick to read the noises of the night? Let him follow with the others, for the Young mens feet are turning, To the camps of proved desire and known delightr Read your child from the Arabian Nights. Here is love that endures; here woman and manare bom for each other and find no peace until they find each other. Here Sinbad the Sailor carries free enterprise into the dangerous .places of the world, and brave Princes and passionate Princesses hold the impossible dream through separation and years of waiting. Here the great standards go into battle, and loyalty and courage live in the hearts of men. Here are Ali Baba and his Forty Thieves (with no Supreme Court to save them) and Aladdin and his wonderful lamps. It is a book that will nourish, the joy of life in the heart and glory of love. Be sure that your children know the knightly splendor of Ivanhoe, The Lady of the Lake, and all they can of Sir Walter Scott, one of the greatest. Here virtue and courage will become the shining substance of the soiil; here all that is good and great, all that is absolute and eternal, will be sunlight in the very bloodstream.. As children grown, try to incorporate into the family life a reading of Charles Rcades The Cloister and the Hearth." This writer found this book a witty, delightful one, and recommends it heartily. It is an absorbing love story, written in the classical style, with adventure, and some disappointments, but love conquers all. Other fine books, of course, are Dickens David Copperfield and in fact most all o'f his books are worth reading over and over again. There are so many outstanding authors and their uplifting, beautifully illustrated and written books available, and some of them actually on the Utah state list for It jnakes one use in schools. wonder why. the horror stories predominate in school. ON COURSE Larry Wilcox Almost everyone in America today recognizes that troubles crowd peace and harmony into the background. Almost everyone has a theory which purports to tell us why we have so many problems. However, the basic problem is almost never recognized or discussed. Unless we discover the problem, solutions are impossible. The problem is one' of methodology. The socialists have made a The particular phrase famous. is end justifies the means," a basic tenet of socialism and all other systems of plunder and aggressive force. The philosophers of these systems claim that the goal sanctifies the chosen method. These people always propose goals which sound good. However, they always propose to use immoral methods to reach their goals. They claim that since the goal is commendable any method, up to and including murder, is justifiable so long as the goal is reached. They claim that an evil or immoral method will cause a good or moral result. The truth, however, is found iii the following statement: The method guarantees the result." An immoral method guarantees an immoral result. A moral method guarantees a moral result. One of the major problems in todays violent society is almost always overlooked. public education is an immoral method which has resulted in a society of socialists who believe they can practice charity through the use of aggressive force. The reason this has happened is that public education is a system of aggressive force. Pupils are forced to study a curriculum they or their parents had nothing to do with creating. The following questions should be asked concerning public education": 1. Ferguson TAX REDUCTION FOR UTAH TAXPAYERS American taxpayers, staggering under taxes, are justifiably concerned that they are rapidly gaining a top spot on the list for endangered species. With the sum total of all taxes taking approximately 40 of our earnings each year, one wonders' just how much we can endure. And, unfortunately, it seems that all too many politicians can only think of INCREASING never decreasing taxes. During this session of the Utah State Legislature, however, we have seen some encouraging developments. One is that a bill has passed both the Senate and the House to reduce income taxes by $10 million. Of course, the graduated income tax has been one of the most insidious but serious threats to personal freedom since its inception. And, of course, the graduated feature has not been eliminated, but having all that happen all at once might be too much to ask for. Nevertheless, the reduction in the amount of tax is definitely encouraging! ever-in-creasi- ng REDUCTION IN INHERITANCE TAX Co.) has led the fight Rep. Charles Bulen bill a to of inheritance reduce for passage taxes. At the time of this writing, the bill has passed both houses and is awaiting the governor's signature. This bill does not eliminate inheritance taxes, but it does reduce them and is again a step in the right direction. The inheritance tax has put tremendous burdens on widows and children who want to continue operating a farm or business built up by the husband or father. In many cases, the tax has been so great that the survivors were forced to sell the business in order to pay the tax. This type of confiscatory tax is and always has been contrary to the American concept of the Our right to own and control private property. legislators, especially Rep.
