For years racy youve seen polls conducted by Gallup, Harris or Roper or so of the showing 80 so-call- ed people against foreign aid. . . or forced racial busing. . .or Henry Kissinger's Sinai plan. But has that stopped the politicians or the courts from doing what they wanted to do? "democracy Now please note very carefully what is happening. Note how the press has reversed its field and now wants to protect democracy! You see, the anti-gupress has found a poll that seems to support their position for gun control. Louis Harris has determined-- by asking 1500 n 73 of Americans want gun corn roll In fact, Harris has become more of a crusader than a He says, Theres going to be a turnabout in Congress on gun control; candidates who say that gun control legislation is wrong people-th- at poll-take- r. trol. But the important thing-a- nd this is something the press is desperately trying to keep quiet-- is that an honest poll of more than six times as many voters as Harris sampled shows that 96 of Americans, when asked the direct question, Would you want your Congressman to vote to take away handguns from all private citizens? voted NO! This poll was taken by the 300-1- 0 Action Plan people three months ago. They asked 9,587 people at random that question and only 303 said yes! Let me repeat: Out of a sample more than six times as many as tested by Lou Harris, an independent poll shows that 96 of the people oppose losing their right to own guns. This poll shows very clearly that the public wants crime control, not gun control. Perhaps that's why the 300-1polls are never reported in the press. Len Martin, who heads the 300-1- 0 organization, tells me that he is recruiting who volunteer will help take the pulse of the country once a month on an important issue. Clayton Thomas, whose acute social concern took him directly from college into a job as social worker in New Yorks slums, came out recently, thoroughly chastened with some awful truth. To wit: our metropolitan welfare population is not caused by a lack of jobs. Nor will the swelling welfare rolls (now at 1 5 million) shrink when better housing, job training and education are made available. Unfortunately, and contrary to his hopeful expectations, he found that by and large the bulk of our permanent welfare population is composed of loafers, cheaters, baby producers, prostitutes and drug addicts. The continuing decay of great sections of New York City and the condemnation and razing of whole city blocks are caused by welfare recipients. In other not vice versa. words, slums are being made by people Thomas thinks that the principal barrier to a constructive approach of our welfare program is the big mountain range of soothing popular myths that obstructs the critical view of the general public. He takes these myths apart one by one. Reform minded people hope that better Says he, schooling for welfare children will prepare them for jobs and a decent future but, unfortunately, the decline of ghetto schools has paralleled the rise of the welfare rolls and the expansion of slum areas. The role of the teacher is no longer to teach but to maintain minimal order. Says one teacher, My two jobs are to keep myself alive and to keep my students alive. All this adds up to make our welfare system a ludicrous farce of inefficiency, manipulation and fraud. It is destroying our nations cities, terrorizing the populace, exacerbating racial hostility and keeping the American middle class on the run from deteriorating neighborhoods, drugs and violence. - The Macon Herald Macon, Georgia Free men can vote themselves into slavery, but slaves cannot vote themselves free." .1. Kccsc 1 1 unto PROTECT AND PERSON TO RIGHT HOME CLARIFIED Some possible of pending misinterpretations" criminal code legislation have prompted several Utahns and others to write Senator Jake Garn (R-U- t) protesting the fact that they may no longer be able to defend themselves and their property against intruders. The legislation is Senate Bill 1, which would codify all Federal criminal laws. I agree with the intent of S.l", the Utah freshman said today. It is necessary to bring the myriad of Federal criminal laws into a workable whole. But I do not agree with certain provisions of the legislation and am concerned that it. is so complicated that different and possibly erroneous interpretations are being put on it. The controversial provision in the bill states that unless you or another person are threatened with serious bodily harm or risk of death, you are not justified in using deadly force against an intruder; that you are not justified in using deadly force to protect property. It should first be clearly understood that this applies only to areas under Federal jurisdiction and does not preclude State criminal law. And, I think it has always been clear that a person has the right to defend his home or family. But in case there is a I want my misunderstanding, position clearly defined: It is difficult, if not impossible, to determine if you are threatened by an intruder with bodily harm. If you wake up in the middle of the night and find someone going through your home, how do you know if he has a weapon or what he plans to do with it? It would be difficult to stop and interview him. A person has the right to privacy in the home and has the right to protect it. If that means shooting an intruder, as heartless as it may sound, a person should have the right to do it in the privacy of the home. I feel that far too much leeway is being given to the criminal and that the law in many ways is making it easier for him to carry on. I think the victims of crime should have rights as well as the criminals. GIVES OF MCDONALD WARNING Wicked men obey from fear; good men, from love. -- Aristotle TERRORIST ACTIVITIES Washington, D.C. Seventh District Larry Congressman McDonald has placed information in the Congressional Record indicating that the Puerto Rican terrorists responsible for Mondays bombings are planning another on series of demonstrations 1. November The demonstrations by Forces for National Armed Li beration (FALN), will take place in New York, Chicago and the Bay area of California and will demand the release of five Puerto Rican terrorists who are in prison forathe attempt to assassinate President Truman in 1950, and the shooting attack on Members of Congress on the House floor in 1954. McDonald feels that there is good reason to believe that the terrorist attacks will include bombings and possibly shootings. Planting bombs is a cowardly act in itself," he said. But there is reason to believe that these cowards have been using the young girls of the Weather Underground, another terrorist group, to plant their boms.
