Ferguson WITH AUTOMATIC CALATOR ES- - COST-OF-LIVIN- G cost-of-livi- ng CONGRESSMAN SYMMS COMMENTS ON PAY HIKE Idaho First District Congressman Steve Symms was sharply critical of the Congressional pay increase, terming it, "...the height of arrogance and irresponsibility." Symms continued to comment extensively on the increase: "By putting themselves on an automatic pay escalator. Members of Congress have chosen to insulate themselves from both the ravages of inflation and any political accountability to their constituents. Now they don't have to worry about the inflation they create because their salaries will automatically rise without them having to vote on it. This, to my way of thinking, is the height of arrogance and irresponsibility. "Meanwhile, due to the reckless spending habits of these same Congressmen, the average American has to struggle just to make ends meet. How can the people's supposed representatives be so insensitive to the feelings middle class America? The average of taxpayer is having a hard enough time providing for his own family w ithout hav ing to foot the bill for more lavish living by his Congressmen. "This year Congress intends to stick our nation with the largest peacetime deficit in history, an amount approaching S80 billion. Now it votes to protect itself from the increased inflation which is bound to result, while telling everyone else to tighten their belts. It is no wonder that public approval of the 94th Congress has plummeted to only 15percent. Membersof Congress should not even entertain the idea of a salary hike until they make a sincere effort to hold down federal spending. I can think of no better place to start exercising fiscal restraint than with our own paychecks." Congressman Symms concluded. hard-worki- ng JUST MADE ONE CONGRESSMAN DIFFERENCE THE Remembering the vote of 2 4 to 2 3, every American should examine the voting record of his congressman on this measure. Just one congressman changing his vote would have reversed the situation and saved the American taxpayers thousands of dollars. Also, every American should write to his congressman and let him know just how he feels on this inflationary measure. Then, too. when election time rolls around next year, be sure and remember how each congressman voted. More and more people are realizing that it's time for a housecleaning in the Congress. 1 1 Government Economy favor the policy of economy, not because I wish to save money, but because I wish to save people. Utah 84754 1 House of Representatives passed on July 31 a resolution which raises the annual salaries of Congressmen by nearly $4,000 and puts Congressional pay on an automatic escalator basis. Idaho Congressmen Steve Symms and George Hansen both voted NO on the pay raise and FOR the taxpayers of America. Congressman Gunn McKay of Utah voted YES for the pay raise and AGAINST the taxpayers. Utah Congressman Howe voted AGAINST the raise. When the same measure passed the Senate, Utah Republican Senator Jake Cam voted NO on the raise. It is logically predictable that the states with the toughest gun laws have the highest crime rates. Criminals get guns while others don't. In contrast, our Southern and Western states statistics prove that people themselves are the first line of defense against crime and have some personal responsibility to protect their own family and property from criminal activities. Even supposing the absurdity that handguns could be kept from criminals, law enforcement officials can testify that it requires about ten minutes with a hacksaw to turn a shotgun into a concealable weapon much more to be feared than any pistol. The legitimate value of a handgun is in its very utility as a defensive weapon.
