Show The Paper That Dares To Take A Stand January 16, 1975 The Utah Independent Page 3 Metro NACO NOT SHOOK ON COURSE UP ENOUGH by Jo Hindman with Copyright 1974 The staff (on the payroll) of the National Assn, of Counties (NACo) in Wash., D.C. was disturbed when a large segment of the membership around the nation became outraged by NACos proland use control stance in 1974. It is difficult to understand the surprise expressed by the affiliates. After all. Land Use Control is stated clearly as a NACo objective in the organizations American County Platform, NACos official policy statement of 1973 Other NACo-linke- d groups of county commissioners, especially in the county supervisors been California, have circulating Resolutions Metro against regional governance of which socialistic land use control by bureaucracy is but one facet. The ranks of the outraged continue to swell, mobilizing in California. At any rate, there is a strong belief among both people and confidence men that people who are honest, skeptical, or both are poor subjects for the game. This is true, because invariably the prize is dangled before the subject as something for nothing. The prize is almost like magic. It will solve all problems. Within this past week at least two meetings have been held by Utah citizens to organize to stop the passage of ERA by the Utah legislature. Several groups were represented at a meeting in Provo on the fourth and met in order to coordinate their efforts. One group was the HOTDOG committee which worked so effectively two years ago. Another was the Women for Constitutional Government and another was Stop ERA, whose national leader is the brilliant (and beautiful) Phyllis Schlafly from Illinois. Mr. Schlafly has probably been the leading and most effective spokeswoman (I guess the women libbers would say spokesperson) in informing the American people regarding the dangers of ERA. Incidentally, I dont suppose it would be out of place to inform the readers of the U.I. that they might wish to subscribe to THE PHYLLIS . SCHLAFLY REPORT, published monthly for five dollars a year, address Box 618 Alton, Illinois 62002 THE PHYLLIS SCHLAFLY REPORTS an excellent source of very valuable and reliable information. WHY STOP ERA? There are perhaps hundreds of good reasons why ERA should be stopped. But one of the most important would be that it would take all functions regarding womens rights away from the local state governments and turn them over to the federal government. Furthermore, such lawmaking functions would undoubtedly follow the pattern of the IRS, OSH A, FDA and many other federal agencies which operate in a dictatorial manner. That is, such laws would be written and enacted not by representatives elected by the people but by appointed bureaucrats in the executive branch of the government. In such a situation, the law makers are absolutely beyond the reach of the votes and influence of the people who are so drastically effected by such laws. ERA would be an open invitation to some of the most ridiculous and harmful laws ever passed (and that is saying a lot!). Lets stop ERA! law-maki- ng current murder rate. At that rate, the babys chances are 1 27 in Atlanta, 1 in 35 in Detroit, 1 in 40 in Washington, D.C., 1 in 51 in Miami, 1 in 60 in Chicago, 1 in 67 in New York, 1 in 79 in Boston and 1 in 82 in Los Angeles. However, if the murder rate goes up as it has in the past 10 years, then 1 in 11 persons born in Atlanta this year could be murdered, 1 in 14 in Detroit, 1 in 16 in Washington, D.C., 1 in 17 in New York, 1 in 21 in Miami, 1 in 24 in Chicago, 1 in 32 in Boston and 1 in 33 in Los Angeles. -- Applied Christianity in CONSOLIDATION AND THE UTAH INDEPENDENT Starting with the July 4. 1973 issue of the INDEPENDENT, we have had articles almost continuously on the subject of The Salt Lake County Government Study Commission or its product, the If a charter of consolidation. reader will go back to the beginning of the series, starting with that July 4 issue, he will see that our articles were applauding the study commission and urging readers to attend the meetings to provide voter input to that commission.
