Show I Page Twelve '1 lie Kmeka RepniUT November T 1 reported followed 72 First major snowstorm tops this week's weather story The first major snowstorm of the season moved across the intermountain area this past weekend accompanied by moderate to heavy snowfall in many sections of the state. The snowfall amounts varied from little or none in some of the lower valleys to 4 to 10 inches along the bench areas of the Wasatch Front and up to several feet in some of the higher mountains of Northern Utah. This storm occurred just 28 days latter than by Park inches and Valley Scofield Dam with 1.41 inches. with 1.71 Average temperatures this past week ranged from near the record early storm of last year which began on the noth of September and ended on the first of October. The series of storms this past week which hit the drouth areas in Southern Utah further improved the soil moisture on winter ranges in the area. And now what is the general outlook for November based on the past period of climatic record? November is normally the second driest month of the year except along the Wasatch Front and over the Northern Mountains. On the average, high pressure dominates the area an average of 5 days out of the month. As a result the con centrations of air pollutants increases and low visibility may be a problem, especially in the industrial areas of the state. The month usually finds one or two storm fronts from the Pacific sweeping across the area, and the first persistent snowcover begins to build up in the higher mountains. Snowfall during the month averages between 2 and 5 inches in most areas of the state, although only traces can be expected in the Dixie area. The greatest precipitation in 24 hours during this month is 4.50 inches which occurred at Monticello on the 27th in 1919. Temperatures take their annual plunge into the subfreezing zone during this month, with minimums dropping below of freezing on well over the days. On a few occasions, the coldest temperature of the year has been recorded during The November. highest maximum ever recorded for the month is 86 degrees at Saint George on the 3rd in 1925, and the coldest temp 28 degrees below zero at Blacks Fork on the 13th in 1916. Provo Canyon, Hi. Max., on 23rd; Lo Min., 26 on 29th; Avg. Temp., 47 F., Precip .35 on 24th; .28 on 25th; 1.57 on 29th.
