Parts of the letter should be of interest to many of the townspeople. Dear Mr. Butler: As an individual and a member of the Sundowners Motorcycle Club I would like very much to thank you and your town of Eureka for making our run on the weekend of May 13 and 14 such a success. Many of the residents we met along the streets and in the various business establishments greeted us with genuine friendliness and in many cases asked us to return again next year. Some of the residents talked bikes with us, which of course is one of our favorite subjects, and as a result a number of nice acquaintances were made. But should our annual visit to Eureka ever be challenged by anyone, other than the majority of the Eureka residents I hope you will understand his personal motivations for expressing his particular point of view. Riverside, Calif. won- Mrs. Rowena Hanks was in Orem on Friday of last week attending an Open House for a grandson and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. William Hassell who were married in Salt Lake City June 20. The bride is the former Ruth Sadler of Magna and the groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hassell of Orem, former residents of Eureka. The Open House was held on the beautiful patio of the Hassell home in Orem. Mr. and Mrs. Wellings Schow spent last week at Fish Lake and Strawberry on a fishing trip. They returned home on Sunday. Green, passes away Leo W. Green, 73, a former resident of Silver City and Eureka, and father of Mrs. Grace Bernini and Mrs. Leona Franks of Eureka died Sunday morning, July 2, in a Logan hospital after an illness. He was born April 17, 1899 in Pleasant Grove, Utah, a son of William Green and Nettie Richins Green. He had been residing in Logan for the past 15 years. He worked as Foreman of State Road (Eureka Shed) for 8 years, while living in Silver, and was a mechanic at the Chief Consolidated Mine for a number of years before moving to Logan. He also served as a member and President of the Tintic School District, Board of Education, during his residence here. He married Maud Wiley. She preceded him in death. He then married Edythe Ivy Duffield. She also preceded him in death. He later married Vivian Wiley Sept. 12, 1967 Surviving are his widow, Logan, one son and two daughters, Robert W. Green, U. S. Air Force Ohio; Mrs. Joseph (Grace) Bernini and Mrs. Darrell (Leona) Franks, both of Eureka, six grandchildren, one seven step E. Rew children, Wiley, Brigham City; Mrs. W. E. (Mary) Booker, Pico Riveria, Calif; Mrs. Kenneth (Shirley) Rasmussen, Salt Lake City; Mrs. Pete (Sally) Eliasm, Las great-grandchil- d; Vegas, Nev. Ernest Wiley, Booker. 13-1- 5 Nephi will be transformed into the old west next Thursday when the 38th annual Ute Stampede opens with a western-typ- e parade along main street, starting about 6:30 p.m. and the first of the Ute Stampede rodeos opens at the Fairgrounds arena at 8 p.m. From its beginning in 1935, the Ute Stampete has grown to be one of the top rodeos in the state, and ranks high in the entire west. Thousands see the rodeo each year, and thousands more see the famous Ute Stampede parades on the three days of the celebration this year July 13, 14 and 15. Parades will be held at 6:30 p.m. July 13, 4 p.m. on Friday, July 14 and Saturday, July 15. RCA-approv- ed Fridays usually parade features up to 80 entries bands, floats, displays, etc. from communities of Utah, Sanpete, Sevier, Millard and Juab Counties, as well as other cities of Utah. Saturdays parade will be the annual bathing beauty parade, with $125.00 as top prize. More than 100 professional cowboys are expected for the three rodeo performances, at 8 p.m. each of the three evenings. A special attraction just prior to each rodeo will be a junior steer riding contest. Ultimate winners in state and district will become national junior champions. Featured specialty act of the rodeo will be Saga of the Old West, a realistic portrayal of stage coach days, as well as trick riding, roping and other cowboy specialities. "Fun for all ages is the invitation for the enjoyable rides and events at the City of Fun carnival which will be set up at the Fairgrounds. Reserved seat orders are accepted by J. M. Lunt, Treasurer, with the understanding that tickets not called for by 7:45 p.m. the night for which they are issued will be placed on sale. Another giant block of general admission stands has been provided for this years rodeo events. Mrs Dorthy Nelson of Salt Lake was in town on Sunday visiting with her brother and family, Mr. and Mrs. George Gillespie, and with a son and family, Mr. and Mrs. Ron Nelson, and other friends. E. Lewis Allen Former resident paid respects at funeral rites Funeral services were held Wednesday in Orem for Elmer Lewis Allen, 64, Provo, who died at the Utah Valley Hospital July 1, 1972 after a short illness. Burial was in East Lawn Memorial Hills. He was born in Payson Dec. 6, 1907 to John August and Cora Lewis Allen. He married Ellen Wadsworth Young June 25, 1938 in Norwich, Conn. The marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Mr. Allen had worked as chief engineer for the Pacific States Cast Iron Pipe Co. He was educated in Eureka where he graduated from Tintic High School in 1925. He graduated from the University of Utah in 1929 with a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering. He worked for and graduated from the Westinghouse graduate engineering school at Pittsburgh, Pa. In 1934 he began work for Pacific States Cast Iron Pipe Co. at Provo and in 1940 became plant engineer and in 1945, chief engineer. He was active in the LDS Church as a stake missionary, Sunday School teacher, stake MIA superintendent, High Council member, counselor in the bishopric and other positions. Survivors include his widow of Orem; a son and two daughters, Arthur W. Allen, Orem; Mrs. Edson K. (Ann) Barton, Los Gatos, Calif.; Mrs. George J. (Coral) Todd, Ilernelon, Va.; a brother and sister, Dr. Glenn L. Allen, Provo; Mrs. Howard J. (Myrth) Hassell, Salt Lake City and four grandchildren. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Bradford of Spanish Fork were Sunday dinner guests at the home of an aunt and uncle Mr. and Mrs. Ted Colovich. Other visitors during the week were Mrs. Colovichs brother and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Leonal King of Provo. |
