While Utahs neighbor on the north is not tooting her own horn, she is quite up with the procession in the matter of mining activity, and the present seasons operations will give a great impetus to the industry in that State. The renewal of activity is especially noticeable in Owyhee county, Boise gold belt, Boise Basin, Elmore and Lemhi counties, the Florence country and the Yahk district, being thus generally distributed over the State. Greater attention is being paid to the gold resources than ever before, and this must certainly result in a large increase in the States production of that metal. In the gold districts adjacent to Boise a great many new discoveries have been made and strong syndicates have purchased a number of properties. These mines are generally grass root propositions and pay for their own development. Several stamp mills are in operation upon the ores of this section, and a custom mill, erected at Boise this year, fihds more business than it can handle. The old silver camps in Owyhee county are producing heavily, and an Eastern company is expending a large amount of money in the development of the Florida mountain mines, a twenty-stam- p mill, to be erected at Boone-vill- e, being among the improvements. It is also announced that a Spokane syndicate has just effected a consolidation of a large group of old silver-lea- d properties southwest of Silver City, and that they are to be developed on an extensive scale. The placers of the Boise basin have enjoyed a much longer period of water supply this year than usual and a larger production is the result. The gold quartz ledges of Boise county are also being more actively worked than for some years past. In the Neal district, in Elmore county, three stamp mills are crushing gold ore. In the Dixie district, the Golden King group shows immense bodies of profitable gold ore and the recently organized company will erect a cyanide A. D. & M. Co. at Gibbonsville con- 3 There is no profit in anything except mining, is a remark frequently heard during these times of general business depression, and in a measure this is true. Most deplorable conditions must prevail throughout the land when industry and capital can find but one profitable field of operation, and we of the West have reason to congratulate ourselves that we occupy this field. The mining region can endure the blight just as long as the balance of the country and emerge from it in better condition. Demonetization has taught the silver miners how to operate their mines more cheaply, and they have adjusted themselves to the changed conditions. It has also raised the price of gold from $20 to $40 per ounce, as measured in all commodities, and the gold miners are able to stand this. Single standard or double standard, the mines will continue to flourish. The industry Is upon a stable basis. An exchange pertinently remarks that there is one thing about gold mining investments that everybody does not know. If a man manufactures something he does not know what he is going to get for it The price fluctuates gold-standa-rd templates important additions to its equipment. Several new placer enterprises have also been Inaugurated in Lemhi county. Idaho county demands attention by reason of the gold excitement at Florence, and a lively, hustling young camp has sprung up near the ruins of the old placer town. The source of the placer gold was but recently discovered and many ledges of free milling gold quartz have been opened up.
