That our mineral deposits may not always last is indicated by the following statement taken from the Science News-Lettof Washington, D. : The state of low supplies in the mineral cupboards of the future was revealed to the meeting of the American So poor Mr. Everett went home, as ordered. But it may be doubted how long this mandate will be effective. Nobody need be surprised if the sufferer suddenly disappears again, after a few days or weeks. And the next time he will probably be found not inside the tree trunk, but safely up in the Institute of .Mining and Metalurgical Engineers in New York, when D. F. Hewitt, geologist of the U. S. Geological Survey, discussed the production of metals in Europe during the last 300 years. The European trend toward combinations and understandings to control such metals as iron and steel, mercury, aluminum, zinc, lead and copper, has arisen from the unspoken realization that Europes metal production has taken a downward tendency, Mr. Hewitt said. In America vast resources of iron, copper, lead, zinc, 'silver and gold have been attacked so vigorously that many leading districts are approaching exhaustion, and metal production is being maintained by the application of new metallurgical ores. American mining operations processes to lower-grad- e are deepening shafts at a rate two to four times as fast as those of Europe, Mr. Hewitt observed. Whereas mines in Europe range from 1,200 to 16,000 feet in depth. American mines are often in excess of 4,000 feet. If we are willing to pay the price in fuel, power and labor, enough iron, manganese, aluminum and gold can be produced. Mr. Hewett indicated, but mercury, lead and chromium are more localized and less likely to be produced in sufficient quantities for future generations even if the price is increased to stimulate the supply. Mr. Hewitt's testimony is somewhat contradictory to the information emanating from South America. Canada, Siberia and Africa, which reports that immense deposits of copper, lead, zinc and other minerals are being developed against industry's future needs. Of course, conservation is needed. Consumption of metal is many fold larger than a generation back, but nature seems always ready to respond with new stores, when the old are nearing exhaustion. Thig has been the trend of history in Utah camps and it will probably be the line of development in other world centers of mineral production. No one can deny that the mineral resources of the world are being more rapidly consumed than at any time since the Bronze age, but what about the silver shortage predicted ten years ago and even more recently ? How about the oil shortage foreseen by alarmists not more than fifteen years back. Then we were old that petroleum was being used up so rapidly that by 1930 the oil products of the world would be principally derived from shale. But today oil men are asking er C-- Provo Foundry & Machine Co. Complete Foundry and Machine Shop IMfh Flaat at Brava. vial. I ark Dont look here for one of the popular "Intelligence tests. The reader will find merely three or four questions taken from a leaflet issued by a reputable college to prospective students. Are you, asks the head of the college, prolonging your mental youth, enriching your middle life and laying up treasures of joy for your old age? Well, thats a little embarrassing, possibly impertinent. Who is this man, anyway, to question the value of pastimes like bridge and smokers and lodge meetings and ball games, and a little recreation like dancing? Do you, continues the merciless educator, regularly commune through literature, music or art with the greatest minds and hearts of all ages and nations? Whom are you choosing for your mental associates? Now, on the level, the boys are not so badl Does your mind, this old fellow continues, travel abroad and get a more sympathetic understanding of other times, other people and other civilization through the study of their history, customs, languages and literatures? Do you get a better and better understanding of the laws that govern the world in which you move and have your being? Really, he makes a person nervous. And yet this queer college man is luring into systematic study thousands, of all ages, who for the first time in their lives have got the idea that mental training knowledge and culture are worth while, even if you dont make any money out of them. This venerable gentleman suddenly left his family and comfortable home, and lived for three days in a hollow tree on ginger snaps. At the end of that time, haled forth by his scandalized relatives and dragged into court, Mr. Everett explained his action simply and logically. He had run away from the dodgasted radio set which hlg family insisted on running wide open all the time. The judge, sad to say, was not very sympathetic. A hollow tree, he maintained, was no place for a gentleman 69 years old. He should go home end live normally with his folks, enduring the radio music, however prolonged and terrible it might be.
