Haevnor & Company. Early in 1954, the firm of H. E. Havenor and Company, was consolidated with the Cayais Brokerage Company, as Havenor-CayaiInc., Jack Cayais, Sterling Larson and Irwin Glaser, becoming the Junior members of the firm. s, Havenor then retired from active participation in the brokerage business to give his full time in the management of the Howell Mining Company and the West Toledo Mines Company and others. ' He has held the reputation from his early days of providing customers with accurate analyses of special situations. He was especially helpful to stockholders of the North Lily mine, not only acquiring the stock for his brokerage clientele but also acquiring control of the mine prior to its sale to the International Smelting & Refining Company. This was a profitable move because the mine hit rich ore and ultimately paid out $1,000,000 in dividends. Havenor also, in the pioneer days of the oil boom, persuaded his clientele to purchase such stocks as Equity Oil Company, n Oil and Ashley Valley Oil, all now dividend payers, and each enjoying substantial production down through the years. His energies today, are mainly devoted to uranium mining in the management of the Howell Mining Company with holdings at Marysville, Utah and Utah-Souther- other areas. Although J. A. Hogle is the oldest member of the Salt Lake Stock Exchange, Earl Haveners friends insist hi applying the soubriquet of Dean to him, y possibly because of his activity on the Stock Exchange in person until his retirement from that activity. day-to-da- - 36 Assayers and Chemist! There were several lead and silver properties and placer gold operations, all providing incentive o brokers to trade in Bingham stocks. About the same time in Park City, Haggin and Hearst had discovered the Park City mining district. They also owned th. Homestake mine. This was a speculative mining corporation and local brokers had something to play with in Park City stocks. .The mining camp of Tintic, south of Salt Lake was then in its infancy, although several corporation s were on the scene. Alta was another mining camp, actively developed by English capital. There also were securities of corporations from the camp of Alta that could be traded along the curb, at Seconu South and Main. Thus,, brokers congregated for trading in a va- riety of local mining enterprises. Eventually they went indoors, in a building on Second South Street. The business was formalized in 1880 by incorporation as the Salt Lake Stock Exchange, originally begun in an informal way. As time elapsed, copper was discovered in -- Bingham Canyon. A marvelous individual came out of the East by the name of Samuel Newhouse. He became active in Bingham Canyon through the medium of the Boston Consolidated Copper Mine, the first successful copper producer 'in Bingham Canyon. was an emprn, Newhouse builder. He invested his funds in real estate and decided to build up Salt Lake City. His dream was to build Exchange Place into the Wall Street of the West. He erected the Newhouse and the Boston Buildings on the corner. About 1910 the present Salt Lake Stock Exchange building was opened. Newhouse had presented the lot on which it stands, as a free gift to members of the local Newhouse had intended to construct two additional buildings on State Street, at the east rad of Exchange Place. He neve, succeeded in this ambitious program. He also planned to erect a Newhouse Theatre directly the Stock Exchange building. That idea also failed to materialize.
