Demand for lead continued excellent last week, producers said, and zinc demand was also improved, according to E. & M. J. Metal and Mineral Markets. On the strength of the brighter outlook, both domestically and on ' the London metal market, the price of lead was increased cent following two similar raises during the previous week, to 13 Vi cents a pound, New York basis. Zinc buying was only fair for the prime western grade but there was some improvement toward the end of last week and sales for the month totaled up to a fairly respectable figure. Demand for nearby copper continues active, but buying interest in July forward was lacking Prices realized in the free market showed , little variation last week. In fact, the foreign and domestic markets were virtually on an even basis. Chilean copper continues to move on the unchanged basis of 35 Vic., f.a.s. port of shipment Most foreign producers outside of Chile have been offering copper to U. S. consumers on the basis of the E&MJ domestic, average. During April, domestic fabricators shipped products that contained 116,319 tons of refined copper. This compares with 122,980 tons in March. One explanation for the drop was that fabricators consumed more scrap. The reduction in use of primary copper was unexpected. LEAD , Consumers were in the market for good tonnages and the sustained buying movement resulted cent adin another vance in prices.
