Chapman. These tests are a part of the Bureaus manganese program, designed to" increase our domestic supply of this strategic mineral through such diverse projects as the attempt ot develop-- a satisfactory method of mining e ore from extensive deposit at Artillery Peak, Ariz., nnri the study of means of reclaiming manganese from steel furnace slags. The Bureaus present report summarizes results of investiga tions of ore samples from the Idaho Manganese, Hot Spot, and McGregor properties near Cleveland, Bannock County, Ida. Ail of the ores investigated were found to he amenable to simple washing, sizing, and pravity concentration methods, according to the report. Both the Hot Spot and McGregor ores yielded dioxide products, which are probably suitable for use as dry battery depolarizer, although physical characteristics of these two ores prevented high recoveries. As only one of the ores the Idaho Manganese sample was high enough in grade for direct marketing to ferromanganese producers, all three ores were subjected to other ore dressing concentration methods to determine their amenability to treatment. The Bureaus report, conveniently divided into three parts, contains physical and chemical descriptions of the ores, tabulates size distribution data, and presents a detailed account of each method of treatment low-grad- open-heart- h high-purit- high-mangane- se y, Tungsten Miners Receive Increase At Nevada-Mas- s. On June 25, President Truman reinstated the lead tariff of c a pound on the lead content in a pound foreign ores and 1 on lead bullion and refined lead, in accordance with the provision of the law which suspended the l-6- duty on February c 12. Foreign copper was also moving in larger volume at higher prices as the Office of Price Stad bilization issued, its order lifting price curbs allowing custom smelters to charge any price they can get for copper refined from foreign concentrates and ores. To insure "equitable distribution of domestic and foreign copper, the national production authority has revised its Order Under the revised regulation authorizations will specify the amount of allocated domestic refined copper and the amount of other (foreign) refined copper to which the brass and wire mills, foundries, ingot makers and miscellaneous users will be entitled. COPPER 24)c, Valley The Office of Price Stabilization announced that all sales of foreign copper refined from imported ores, concentrates and scrafp have been freed from price control. This sets aside the 27 c ceiling Imposed under GCFR. Supplementary Regulation 46, and permits custom smelters to sell at the market. Several provisions of the latest order require clarification as doubt exists regarding the status of Imported raw materials absorbed prior to June 16. Sales of foreign copper, here and abroad, increased in volume and more than 24,000 tons were involved in establishing the E&MJ quotations for the week. Chilean business assumed more importance in the weeks business. The f.o.b. refinery average for the week that ended yesterday was 35.186c, against $33. 454c in the preceding week. Business was noted at prices ranging from 33c f.a.s. New York, equivalent to 35 c f.a.s. Chilean ports. Copper fabricators in the United states shipped the equivalent . long-awaite- M-1- 6. of 109,890 tons of refined copper to their customers during May, against 106,109 tons in April. Again, the buying was quite general in character, with the large consumers apparently following a more conservative purchasing policy than others. There were no new developments in connection with the 20,-1- 90 governments 'proposed plan to stockpile lead for the civilian economy. Criticism of the plan may have prevented the authorities from takin gon metal at this time. ZINC 15c, East St L. (f.as. Gulf 1446c) The reduction in the price of zinc to the 15c basis failed to bring in much business. The steel strike, along with some uncertainty over the rate of activity in the automobile industry, caused business to drop off. The upturn on lead had a steadying influence on zinc, but largely in the speculative end of the business. Trading in zinc futures resumed and initial sales of September metal were recorded at 14 c. Later in the day, on news of the rise in lead, the price advanced to 15c. The delivered price for the United Kingdom was reduced 8 pounds per long ton. Zinc concentrates in the Joplin, M, market declined to $100 per ton, reflecting the 15c quotation for zinc. TIN $121, N. Y. The speculative markets in London and the Far East firmed up on possible complications over the situation in Korea. Demand for tin in the domestic market has moderated because of the work stoppages at tinplate mills. Malaya produced the equivalent of 4949 long tons of tin in May, making the five months total 23,522 tons.'
