The quantity of copper ore mined nearly all of which came from Bingham district declined in 1951, owing to a labor strike of five days at the Utah Copper property of the Kennecott Copper Corp. On the other hand, the tonnage of ore, which came largely from the Bingham and Park City districts, was much greater in 1951 than in 1950 as a result of fulltime operations except for shutdowns of 8 to 13 days at the principal zinc-lea- d mines. MILLING AND SMELTING The most important milling plants in Utah that operated nearly all year were the Magna and Arthur copper mills each) of the Kennecott Copper Corp, the Midvale 1,700-to- n zinc-leaconcentrator of the International Smelting & Rezinc-lead-silv- zinc-lead-silve- r d zinc-lea- d n fining .Co., the concentrator of the Silver King Coalition Mines CO. at Park City zinc-lean conand the centrator of the Combined Metals Reducton Co. at Bauer. Copper oire treated at mils dropped from 31,047,220 tons in 1950 to approximately 30,530,000 tons in ore treated 1951, but zinc-lea- d increased from 577,689 tons to 800-to- d about 700,000 tons. Smelting operations in Uta were shut down for brief periods in 1951, owing to labor strikes. The Garfield copper smelter of the American Smelting & Refining Co. operated eleven, months of the year, principally on copper concentrates from the Magna and Arthur mills. The Midvale lead smelter of the United States Smelting, Refining & Mining Co. operated nearly all the year, principally on lead concentrates produced from ore from company-owned- 1 mines n Utah. The Tooele lead smelter of the International Smelter & Refining Co. was idle six weeks following a fire In the Cottrell plant, August g 27, and the company zinc conplant, operated in junction with the lead smelter, was likewise idle six weeks. The lead smelter operated mostly on lead concentrates from mills, ore and lad ore'and zinc-leafrom mines, in California, Nevada and Utah, The . slag-fumin- . d. slag-fumi- ng plant ' treated a total of about 87,800 tons of hot current slag and crude ore in 1951, compared with 87,761 tons in 1950; production was approximately 17,700 tons of zinc fume averaging 73.44 per cent zinc and 2050 tons of lead fume averaging 52.44 per cent lead and 17.80 per cent zinc. The International copper smelter at Tooele remained idle. The Kennecott Copper Corp. operated its copper refinery at Garfield nearly all year and mainly wire bars from copper "bullion received from the Garfield smelter.
