EUREKA (TINTIC) DISTRICT UTAH Chief Consolidated Mining Company, ore 89 cars; mill tailings 35 cars. Godiva, 2 cars. Lead Shows Slight Drop The average daily rate of lead production from domestic mines in October dropped 28 tons or two per cent from the September level, according to the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, terms of recoverable metal, was 35.356 short tons, an average of 1141 tons per day compared with 35,084 tons in September produced at an average rate of 1169 tons pei day. Although every state in the Western region except California and Nevada produced more lead in October than in the previous month total output advanced only .505 tons over the September figure. This gain was less- than the quantity required to maintain the September daily rate of output through the longer working period in October and as a result the average daily production rate for the region dropped from 691 tons to 685 tons. Total October output for the area was 21,235 tons compared with 20,730 tons in September. Total domestic mine production of zinc remained virtually unchanged in October as compared with September, according to the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior. October zinc output, in terms of recoverable metal, was 54,728 short tons, an average of 1765 tons per day compared with 54,572 tons in September produced at an average rate of 1819 tons per day. . Zinc production in the combined Western States in October gained slightly over the September figure and was at the highest monthly, level since June 1949. Increased production in California, Idaho, Montana, Utah and Washington were of sufficient magnitude to offset declines registered in the other producing states. The greatest drop in production .occurred in New Mexico where a labor strike beginning October 17 shut down the Empire Zinc Co. Hanover mine and mill in the central district. This strike also curtailed output from mines shipping custom ore to the Hanover mill. The largest of these is the Kennecott Copper Corp. Oswaldo mine, also in the central district. Production at other zinc mines in the central district increased in October and a further gain on zinc output from the district is anticipated with the reopening on October 16 of the Peru Mining Co. S. Department of the Interior. The gross tons produced and 13,419,113. tons shipped were six and eight per cent, respectively, less than in September, a decrease due in part in weather conditions, and in part to' diversion of some lake parriers to grain cargos. Winter stocks of ore at lower lake ports and United States consumers yards increased to 38,206,828 tons on November 1? 1950, or 7,221,179 tons less than on November 1, 1949, according to data of. the Lake Superior Iron Ore Association. Mins stocks were reduced to 7,107,182 tons on October 31, 1950. However, this total was 60 per cent 'higher than a year ago. - 12,-999,-250 H. E.
