Show T I December 5, 1947 Western Mineral Survey, Salt Lake City, Utah L S. (Continued From Page 1) winter will further aggravate this situation. "Conservation by the public of gasoline, used in automobiles, and of fuel oil for home heating this fall and winter will aid during this temporary period of transportation defi- ciencies, general shortages of steel and other materials, and excessive demand. There indications that house-holdedealers and distributors have larger stocks of heating oil on hand than a year ago. Reserves Up It is hoped that the equivalent of these increased amounts in secondary storage may be retained and drawn upon during the period of peak demand which occurs during January or February according to area, thus relieving the pressure on refiners and distributors stocks at that time. The industry has built the nations proved crude oil reserves to a new high record of 20,873- ,560.000 barrels. Additional liquid natural hydrocarbon reserves gas liquids and condensates lift the proved reserves to 24,227- ,447.000 barrels. Postwar governmental demands are several times greater than prewar. These needs, of course, must be satisfied before those of civilians can be taken care of. KELLOGG, Idaho Unwater ing of the Hercules mine shaft in Burke is proceeding at the rate of 3500 gallons a minute 24 hours a day, according to Henry L. Day, president of Day Mines Inc. The Hercules, which was the foundation stone in the Day mining interests, is one of the companies recently merged into Day Mines Inc. Between 15 and 25 feet of the shaft is. unwatered each day; It is expected, the work will be completed by the middle of December. The shaft so far seems to be in good shape. The work is taking place from the No. 5 haulage level of the mine. The Hercules was shut down in 1925 and is now being reopened to permit a geological study of the deep workings. The. shaft is 1200 feet deep and ore at the deepest levels was submarginal at the ' time the mine was shut down. It will be ' determined whether the ore can be profitably mined at todays, prices. The ore also ran about SO per cent .iron on the 1200 level and was hard to treat with milling practices of 20 years ago. The economic bottom of. the mine was reached on the 900 level but the vein continued strong to greater depth. Bailers used by the Hecla Mining Co. in unwatering its mine following the Burke fire of 1923 are being used. by the Hercules. The big Nordberg hoist used in the operation has been In place since the mine was 54.50 13.50 14.25 22.50 83.00 Equity Oil Sun. Con. ..
