Show c That Government of the people, by the people and for the people shall not perish from the earth The :t I , : Capitalism. Is Doomed CONCLUSIONS FROM HIGHEST AUTHORITIES IN THE WORLD TODAY. ; h This paper is convinced beyond the possibility of doubt that the clumsy, decrepit capitalistic system which has wrought so much havoc in the world, will fail. And we have something to take its place which is so far ahead of it that there can be no comparison. Our appeal to people is to help bring about the change in a peaceable, constitutional manner before it is too late. Now is the time. Today is the day ! H. G. Wells, one of the greatest and most minds in the world, has issued many warnings about the fall of capitalism, and here is his latest : There jare no new jobs. Enterprise faints under a load of debts. Plenty, under our system of private profit and private employment, starves the world. Our money and our credit systems are not working. The mechanism has stalled. I confess I see no signs of such an awakening as will save us. A dark curtain is falling on our civilization. I do not see any adequate effort to prevent its fall. Human decay and disaster is plainly before us. The last thing we will produde to avert it is concerted effort. With a wave of sanity, what a world we might achieve i A new life is within the reach of mankind. It is there for the taking. But mankind is not taking it. Why f Because capitalism will not let us. The Public Ownership League of America quotes Dr. Wallace B. Donliam of Harvard as saying, We are now in the midst of the most spectacular, world-wid- e break down of the capitalistic system that has ever hapAnd the League goes on to say, 14 The more pened. discerning of our students of economics and history realize that whirlwinds of rebellion and revolution are Whyf Because the old system will shaking the world. not swerve a hairs breadth out of the beaten track. Their day is done. The aim of tills paper is to point the way. It knows that the way lies through a system of Natural Government, which is simple, honest, constitutional, rational and easy to put into immediate operation. It will save the day and nothing else will. Will you, citizen and reader, help to bring about this saving power! You will have to do it in order to save all that you hold dear. Come forward and contribute to the cause. Help us make the fight your fight, and your childrens fight. far-seei- ng -- ' !v e t 9 f 4 4 vSj Our Philosophy Oi Lite HERE IS SOMETHING THAT IS WORTH WORKING FOB. Despite the fact that our generation has been bo sunk in political and economic error we have had cycles of a wonderful progress that has been greatly worthwhile. But not yet by a long ways have all the efforts of humanity led to a condition that makes for the happy and, free expansion of the soul of the individual, nor to a state of society where everything is secure, satisfying; where nothing impedes or hampers perfect progress, and where all things work in harmony for the building of the soul of man. It is our purpose to do all that in our power lies td usher in the day when sweet peace and tranquility shall supercede war and hate and competition; when every man will have his share of wealth and property and doj his share of work; when cadi soul shall be a happy in a great universal civilization that will know of poverty, idleness and crime, and when those nothing who contribute but the humblest labor will feel a dignified pride and joy and part in the whole sdieme of things ; when all will have a better and higher understanding of the meaning and the harmony of life ; when they, will come to understand the universe and know that it was not meant to be brutal and blind, but a great aspiration to ward order, beauty, freedom and goodness. And in this New World, wiiidi, as Wells says, we may take for the asking, we shall build the City of Happiness ! Joy shall be its light by day and peace by night. Through it all there shall be a pervading sense of love and brotherhood, increasing, wholesome, purifying and uplifting. Love, Liberty and Happiness shall be the sabred flames of daily life, and Human Welfare shall be the watdiwdrds spread all over in letters of living light. Yes, we shall have a world arranged according to all the wisdom, all the longings, all the hopes and all the aspirations of the human heart; a world redeemed, and in which .Ben F. One is like unto an earthly heaven, the other like unto a yawning hell IIow long are we libgoing to tolerate such extremes in a land of erty and equality? We can make a better world. We can change the times in our country if we unite and listen to the lieart-bgat- s of the people. so-call- ed Nearly all well informed people know now wliat the 1ms been declaring and fortelling for many years. Our voice lias been raised in season and out of season as a wanting that something different should be done to head off the social chaos which, follows the mad and unbridled career of great wealth as night follows the day. None would listen. Now all are aware of it. But while they know, they still are unwilling to do anything about it. We believe and know that something can be done. We have a plan, which, if followed, will save the day for our country. And once the honest mind fullyun-derstanthe plan it must conclude that there are no ifs editor of this paper ds A certain great writer has recently said, When America started there were people like Washington, Jefferson and Adams in this country. There arent now. I dont know whats going to bring men like that back again religion, par triotism or just brain work. But we must find some way, somehow, of restoring greatness". The man speaks the literal truth. Who among our leaders would endure what Washington did at Valley Forge? Who among all those in high place would give seven, and more, years of superb service for their country without monetary rewards? Not one among them. Who among the present day politicians and statesmen would stand for the rights of the people and trust the so-call-ed common herd as did Jefferson? Who among them can rise to the heights of patriotism shown by the Adamses? Who among them registers his oath (seriously) in heaven to defend and preserve government of, by and for the people, as did Lincoln? The leader who will be brought forth to set matters right and lead us to the Promised Land, is somewhere among us today, likely walking in loneliness, poverty and obscurity. But he will come forth with the faith of Washington, the ability of Jefferson, the patriotism of Adams and the loyalty of Lincoln to set the national house in order If we do our bit. about it. The founders of our republic understood full well that we could never enjoy anything like a full measure of liberty if there was to be a titled ruling class among he. And so through the constitution they made it impossible for titled aristocracies to exist here. In Bpite of this precaution, however, there has grown up an aristocracy of wealth wliicli is as domineering, as tyrannical, as oppressive and intolerant as any that ever existed in Europe!. This aristocracy dictates and controls all the affairs of government; the officials play to it and take their orders from it. Its few favored beneficiaries control all ithe wealth of the country and therefore hold in the hollow of their hands all human welfare. It is timd that a real peoples government stepped in and relieved them of the powers they have usurped. This paper is not agin the government. It is not done. be tlmt uncon stitutional It is asking anything decidedly for the government and the constitution as the founders meant them to be. It is, however, against the unscrupulous powers of wealth which have taken control of the government and run it in their own interest. It is our aim to bring about a real peoples government and carry it on in the interest of every man, woman and child. It believes that it is time for a new and an honest driqL It believes that out of the hearts of the masses should come the issues and that human welfare should be the sole aim of every one who has anything to do with 4 4 government. Have you ever seriously considered how brutal and horrible it is that the favored few. should hold the power pf bread or starvation over the heads of the many who toil and produce! It would be just as reasonable to give them absolute control over the air we breathe, the light in which we bask, or the water we drink, as to give them control over the bread which sustains life. Have any of our leaders, political or religious, given disinterested and honest thought to this matter and considered the utter and. fathomless wickedness of it all, the infidelity and woe of it! Think of the proposition that the straggling, hungry millions, most of the human race, may have work and bread only upon such terms and conditions as the will of the masters decides With all the plenty that there is, the needy have no access to it save as the money-power- s permit them for profit. This system, says one, is a continuous insult to the soul, a perpetual rape of the human race. From it there can issue nothing but unhappiness, poverty, war, savagery and ruin. It crucifies man; it mocks God, and stains the escutcheon of all nature and all lime. Such a system was never intended by God or nature. But nevertheless it is the unspeakable order of the world, and it persists because man has been ground down and stupefied by liis oppressors until he cannot throw off the yoke. This paper is striking out from the shoulder for something different and better. It is holding open the shining doors to a new social and economic order; not a radical, communistic order, hut a plain, sensible, just, honest, reasonable, constitutional system which, if put into operation, would save the day for our country.
