Lam week' Richfield Run prints this bit of news: Miss Cora liirdHall. an incompetent, through her guardian, Isaac Birdsali, has filed suit In the district court against James E. and Holda Leavitt, to recover properly which had been deeded to the defendants by her. Miss Rirdsalli so it is affirmed, was Inconi petent at the time she signed the deed, and on this ground action is brought by her guardian. That is the case which jras aired at the Smoot investigation in Washington. Leavitt, who could acquire no title to the disputed land through civil courts, appealed to n Dishop's court and was given a favorable decision. Thence the case went to the high council and the first presidency. Through all' these stages Miss Birdsali toutly maintained her original contention that the land was rightfully hers, but meantime her mind began to fall under the strain and the adverse criticism of those In authority. When her mental condition became alarmingly apparent. Miss Birdsali was visited by elders, bringing with them a deed all ready for her signature, who promised to administer to her and thus restore her on condition that she submit to the verdict of the church courts and deed the land to Leavitt. In effect their proposition was that in consideration of a certain acreage of laud to Him in hand paid. God Almighty. through His servants, the elders, would deliver to the party of the second part the health and mental vigor aforesaid, but for failure to transfer such land God would declare the promise null and void. Gomemrclallsm by high eccleslasts may be all right, but it hardly looks fair to Involve the Supreme Being in doubtful real estate deals. . 4 ABOUT PLATINUM. Having read Editor State Journal: article with interest the appearing in your issue of the 21st Our Hope Inst., under the heading, Lies in a Higher Standard of Individual Civic Honor and Righteousness, by our townsman, Elijah Farr, but not agreeing with him in all points, w'ill you kindly grant space for a brief reply? With what Mr. Karr says in regard to Christianity we have no quarrel; there is no question but that when all the world are fully converted to real Christianity, the end of all our troubles will have arrived; but when he tries to show that Socialism can never become a realization until after the world is completely Christianised, we think he falls and hope in a few words to show why. Mr, Karr's article would indicate that while he believes In Socialism as a theory he has no hope that it will ever prove practicable. This is a very sad state of affair, ana we feel sorry for him, and hope in a feeble way to be of benefit, as we believe in both the theory nud practice of the Socialistic principles and have great hopes of living to see their ultimate adoption. The predominant and He says: motive for human action in all ages has been selfishness." In this he is undoubtedly correct; but then he goes on to argue that because men are by nature selfish they never In will enact Socialistic legislation. this, we think, he is radically wrong. The very foundation of the economic structure whh?i the Socialists hope to erect will rest deep down on the imperishable concrete of human selfishness. To illustrate: The working men of the world (and by this term we mean those who produce something as opposed to those who merely clip coupons or live off of what others produce) have produced every penny's worth of wealth in existence, but the great majority of them spend their entire lives in poverty of varying degrees.' Now. the writer and quite a goodly number besides him, have already become thoroughly convinced that their Interests lie wholly with the Socialist aide of the argument.
