SSBSSP DE- Project Again Commenced to Present Another Buat from tho Same ModoL The original bust of Washington by David was subscribed for by a number of patriotic Frenchmen In the year 1826. At that time David waa the most prominent sculptor of France. Lafayette, the friend of Washington and his companion In arms, had collected a large number of portraits of Washington, and watched closely the progress of the model in plaster, making from time to time such helpful suggestions and pointing, out from his gestlons of portraits such characteristics as seemed to best represent his former comrade. The bust, in marble, was finally presented to the United States, and given a place in the library of congress, the only, location available at that time for the exhibition of such art works. Unfortunately, this bust was destroyed by fire, which occurred in the library on the morning of DeThis fire also december 24, 1851. stroyed a large number of valuable works of art, among them a bust of Lafayette, also by David. Love for the United States has not diminished In France. A short time since the project of again presenting to this country a bust of Washington by the plaster David was commenced; model being stlU In existence, the work was finished in bronze. As In 1826, this work was subscribed for by citizens of the French nation, and, it Is a memorable fact that the three names heading the list of subscribers are X those of Lafayette, Rochambeau and De Grasse, descendants of the persons of these names who were valued allies of the United States In the struggle for Independence. From, his first entry In this country he was noted as one of the shrewdest match as well as moneymakers the ring has ever produced, and the hest evidence of this fact is that today he Is probably the richest man ever connected with the sport. Of course he did not make It all at the fighting game, but it was through this medium that he gained his first foothold. He made two moves 111 Frisco which again demonstrated his cleverness. When making the match with Britt for White he was asked about a referee. Charlie leaned hack in his chair and said: "I don't rare who acts; I don't want even a voice In the matter of the selection of the man. lint will ask Mose Gu nt and Major McLaughlin to name nil honest man for us." 'Gunst and McLaughlin are two millionaires and are very powerful In California politics. It Is a cinch If they select a man White will get a fair show, for no referee will dare to arouse the enmity of Gunst and McLaughlin toward him. It will he hie finish If he does. Row cleverly Mitchell avoided that Important Item ran well he Imagined. Ills next move was to engage Battling Nelson to train his boy. White. Nelson has fought Britt and knows his strong snd weak points. He Is so sore nt the Californian that he would do almost anything in his power to have White defeat him. Whether or not White cm carry out the methods that the battling Dane would advise Is another question. These facts are mentioned nntv to show that Mitchell Is never asleep or eaught napping when It comes to matchmaking and getting nil that Is coming to him.
