McWyck and Mr. and Mrs. John F. themfound and Mllun were In Intyre selves In the midst of a violent strike. They were seated in a cafe one night when the strikers entered and smashed the fixtures and the cafe doors and windows. Van Wyck'a hotel was barricaded and the landlord advised the party to remain indoors, as he would not guarantee their lives if they ventured out. Van Wyck insisted that they must catch a train and ordered a carriage to take them to the station. No carriage could, however, be procured, and despite the landlord's pleadings the party started to walk to the station with porter carrying the baggage. A threatening mob followed the party to the station, and things looked critical until Van Wyck explained that they were Americans, when the leader of the mob said he would not molest them, but would kill the porters. Van Wyck said he never saw similar strike conditions elsewhere. The strikers did not apparently fear the police. They stopiied carriages on all the streets and compelled the passengers to walk, Indulged in violence everywhere, and paralysed the city for a week. Deissued orders strict the by Presispite dent Roosevelt regarding the parole of the men of the Russian cruiser Lena, the band of Jackies that arrived here on the vessel Is gradually growing smaller, and scarcely & day passes without desertions from the ranks. Tbe parole under which the crew of the Lena was placed when the vessel was ordered disarmed at Mare Island has proved Ineffective, and there Is practically nothing to prevent to men from returning to their native land There are many expert gunners on the Lena whose services are required at home. Though the Russians have taken oath that they will not take up arms against Japan, there Is no barrier erected by this government to prevent them from doing so, and the fact that the desertions are numerous seems to indicate that such 1j their intention. It Is predicted by the navy and federal officials that when the time comes for the Lena to go into commission It will be found difficult to scrape together a sufficient number of the original crew to man the vessel. The parole under- which the crew and officers of the Lena have been placed limits their movements to Ban Francisco and the immediate vicinity. No bonds were exacted from the officers and men, and aside from their promise they are not bound In any way to remain by the ship. Desertions from the Lena are being reported dally, and tbe federal authorities have received word to the effect that the men are scattering throughout the country, and several are making endeavors to return to Russia. The Japanese steamer American Maru will be due here In a few weeks, and It Is stated that the officials of the company that operates the vessel will exercise great vigilance to prevent any of the Russians from stowing away on board the steamer in order to wreak vengeance on the little brown men by wrecking the ship.
