Show DAILY fc: NEW YORK. Sept. IS. That the rave nutation ae a disturbing factor of social conditions is not confined to the South, was shown the other day by an occurrence, which plainly indicates the feeling existing on the subject among the masses. It happened on board of one of the Joy line steamers running between Providence and New York. Among the passengers on negro, that boat was a who struck up an acquaintance with a white woman on the boat They seemed to get along together famously, when the trouble came. "When meal time came the white woman and the colored man went together to the dining saloon and sat down at one of the tables. The captain, who objected to the presence of the negro at the table where the white passengers were served, gave a hint td the steward and the latter informed the pegro that he would not be served at that table. The negro insisted and, it is said, used language more forcible than elegant. The. negro left, but soon returned with a young white man whom he had Induced to accompany him as a witness, as he intended to sue the Joy Steamship company. Another stormy scenes followed. The witness was scared out of the room and the negro ejected by main force. On deck it came to a clash between the negro and the captain and it is said that in the scrimmage the negro hit the captain in the cheek. Just before the steamer arrived at the dock in New York the negro once more became aggressive and only by the nlmbleness of bis legs he saved himself from a severe beating. ilk iUJUiUlWUMlUiUJUillf? markable that in every case the yuungsters escaped without serious injury, in some cases without . a scratch. some of The numerous strikes, which have already Baatedf several months, are causing a great deal of needless suffering among the families of the strikers. It Is estimated that there are over two hundred thousand able bodied men out of work In this city at present, not because there Is no work for them to do, but because their unions, or rather their leaders, see fit to continue the hopeless struggle against long odds. According to a conservative estimate about one hundred million dollars were ready to he expended in building operations at the beginning of the season, hut owing o the strike of the employes In the building trade scarcely any large contracts could he undertaken or completed, causing a loss of many millions of dollars to tlie laboring classes. "Gentile and Mormon division be definitely drawn is not unexpected. The --lection of the Mormon apostle, Smoot as senator, was the announcement by the church authorities that the Mormon leaders, meant to control state as well &4 church. When at the recent conventions it was found that Smoot had complete control of the Republican party organisation the movement of rebellion was inevitable. Fourteen years ago President Wood- ruff Issued a manifesto authorising the faithful to divide as seemed to them good on party lines and that the church would take no further part In political matters. Prior to that there were distinct Mormon and Gentile parties. But the Gentile politicians were growing restless and the Mormons could see that statehood the longed-fo- r goal of freedom from national restraint would be far more liable to be granted If the state could show a satisfactory political status.
