The Japanese made a fierce attack on ths Russian position at Houtsaitze with fifty-fou- r battalions, thirty-si- x of which ware regular troops. General Kuroki employed the reserve men in the attack while the regulars carried out the feints. The reserves attacked with desperation. Their ranke were decimated by the Russian fire, but the vacancies were quickly filled by fresh men.
