Someone about the capital today recalled the fact that this was the fiftieth birthday of Congressman John Sharp Williams, the minority leader In the house and temporary chairman of the recent Democratic . national convention. The word was passed along the line and the result was that several messages of congratulation were desitatched to Mr. Williams from Democratic leaders who for one reason or another have been kept In Washington during the dog days. Mr. Willlnms is considerably younger than the mnjorlty of those of equal prominence In public life and his friends are confident thnt he is destined for higher honors than any yet bestowed upon him. His leadership of the Democratic minority and the prominent part he took In the St Louis convention hnve made Mr. Wll Rama so well known from one end of the country to the other thnt It Is difficult to realise that hi public ca reer began a little over a decade ago. Tet such Is the fact his election to congress in 1992 hnvlng been his first public office. The question concerning the probable choice cand1-d.-i- te of Kllhu Root a gubernatorial on the Republican ticket Is still undecided and the sltuatlun becomes more complicated than ever. It Is well known that President Roosevelt favors Mr. Root, but Gov-rnOdell is strongly oppooed to Mr. Root and does not seem inclined to yield to the wishes of the president. The governor is ambitious to tie the absolute ruler of the Republican party in Ihle state and he Is afraid that Mr. Root, lieing a strong and energetic man, and strongly backed by Influential elements in the party would not submit to dictation and would soon assume the leadership which Governor Odell covets. The governor had a conference with the president the other day. but an nothing haa been said about the result of the meeting, is safe to assume that Governor his attitude. Odell has not changed In There are two other candidatea Black and the field. Woodruff. Black ould be acceptable to President Bnosevell. if Root's nomination should be Iinimsslble, but Mr. Platt Is strongly opjMised to Mr. Black and Insists upon Mr. Root's nomination. Woodruff 1s not seriously considered by either faction, as he Is believed to be the weakest of the three candidates. If Odell and Ilatl should remain obstinate, howei er, It would not tie surprising should Woodruff be nominated ns compromise candidate. or The renewal of the packing house strikes promises to cause considerable trouble In this city. New York consumes enormous quantities of meat and the serious curtailing of the supply Is bound to be felt by all classes of the imputation. The meat prices have reached a dlxxy height already and the poorer classes are even now compelled to adopt a vegetarian diet Nearly one thousand small butcher shops In the poorer districts of the Ity have been forced to close owing to their inability to purchase meat from the wholesale dealers. The opponents of meat diet are rejoicing, because they see In the present meat famine a welcome opportunity to prove tbelr pet theory, but the suffering masses are not so enthusiastic over the scarcity and costliness of their principle article of food.
