Dr. Slgfrled Oenthe, the hletorlau, went to Fes, the capltol of Morocco, In January last, for the avowed purpose of writing the truth about the sultana of that country. The Cologne Gasette, the most powerful and richest dally newspaper of the continent, had offered to pay the doctors expenses, and both the newspaper and its correspondents thought his connection with the kuisers official gasette would tend to protect the Intrepid newspaper man against violence on the part of the Morocco authorities. The sultan no sooner learned of the doctors arrival in Fes, when he Invited him to call at the palace. There the newspaper man was treated like a prince, his majesty exploiting every known device to turn the truthful reporter Into a miserable liar and sycophant In this the sultan did not succeed, as Genthe's letters from Fes abundantly proved. After the appearance of his first article,. the doctor received distinct warning to desist criticising "his majesty and his majestys holy predecessors, all of whom descended from the prophet. but true newspaper man that he was refused to be either frightened or bribed and went bravely on with his investigations and writings, it being his Intention to furnish a complete history of the Moroccan country, which record is wanting to the present day. Dr. Genthes second critical article appeared March 1, and had no sooner reached Fes than the writer began to notice that he was followed on the streets by suspicious characters and that his house was under police surveillance. On March 7 his third article appeared, the contents reaching the palace by cable. On the following day Dr. Genthe vanished from Fes, and the Cologne Gazette subsequently moved heaven and earth to find him. European detectives worked on the case for two or three weeks, all the evidence gathered showing unmistakably that Dr. Genthe had been abducted by or with the connivance of the Morrocco authorities. Not until a week ago waa the doctor's body found murdered on the high road and horribly mutilated. The work of brigands, says the Morocco sultan, but foreigners at Fes knew better. There Is not the least doubt that the newspaper mnn was kidnapped while visiting the suburbs of the capital, was taken to. the palace, and there put to torture to Induce him to detract. Being a man of stamina and great will power, the doctor probably refused point blank, which caused his torturers to repeat their torment. Whether he died under torture or was killed outright will ptobably never be known. At any rate his majesty of Morocco got rid of a truthful biographer of himself and his ancestors. Dr. Genthes Initial article deals principally with the present sultans predecessors, and, for the first time, announces the fact that, while the descent of Morocco rulers from the prophet is more than doubtful. It cannot be denied thnt their oldest female ancestor was a negro slave. Negro blood In the veins of the holy Sherlflan family absolute rulers of true believers. Most probably the publication of this secret more than anything else he wrote brought about the correspondent's sad and terrible end. According to Dr. Genthe's investigations the present sultan Is descended in the direct line from Mulai, son of a low negro slave woman, his fathers mistress while In the captivity of Abu Hassun. It was this admixture of negro blood of the lowest quality that turned the sultan's ancestors from pious fiends. BeArabs Into Mulai we the with ginning have but a succession of human hyenas on Morocco's throne. Among twelve kings whose history I have studied are only three not notorious for bathing In the blood of their subjects and for enriching the annals of human Infamy by new tortures, by cruelties without number. The crime with which the most ferocious of Roman emperors were charged pale In comparison with the misdeeds of the Moorish sultana styling themselves God's elect Listen to some of the records taken from the writings of their biographers by appointment, as the deeds chronicled are Intended to resound to the glory of the parties plllorlsed. there can be no doubt of their accuracy. Sultan Issahll killed 4.000 of the A blood-thirs- ty half-neg- ro The Holy City. Under the reign of a certain ruler executions were so numerous that crime languished as much outside the palace as It flourished within. Theft was unknown and the people of Fes, thievishly inclined as they are, did not even permit themselves to pick up articles lost In the street, so afraid wera they of incurring capital punishment One day the grand vlsler, trying to curry favor with the sultan, told him thut he had seen a sack of nuts lying on the high road undisturbed for three days such waa the honesty of hla majesty's subjects. How dost thou know that the sack contained nuts? Inquired the sultan I kicked It with my foot. With what lootr With the right foot, your majesty. The aultan turned to hla headsman: Agha besenn (master do thy duty) "knock off hla right foot, he cried, and the grand vlsler, a man of 90, as carried out In a dying condition. Sultan El Hassan exterminated his entire male family In order to secure hia throne, and that being accomplished distributed 10,000 heads among hla three capitals, to be mounted on pikes along the city walla. The heada were secured by mutilating the bodies of those slain In battle, by dispatching the wounded and by killing the prisoners of war. Ten thousand, not a head less. Their display waa to serve ns a warning to all, relatives and subjects alike. According to Morocco customs, the sultan should have a wife for every day In the year, but few rulers of the race were satisfied with that number. The present king's predecessor, for Instant, a man considered quite conservative and liberal minded, hnd fifteen hundred wives. Sultan Mulai Ismail rejoiced at one time In the possession of 528 sons and 342 daughters. I gather this from official lists by the Imperial treasurer, responsible for the maintenance of the Imperial princes and princesses. These lists also show that at one time forty children were born to the aultan within three months. "Ismail waa probably the moat insatiable butcher of men that ever lived, continued the murdered correspondent Not satisfied with wholesale slaughter In war, he regarded the day lost in the course of which he had not killed one man nr one woman with Ala own hand. One of hla commonest, amusements waa to run through with aword or lance slaves In tilting matches. It Is reported that one morning he pierced the heart of prisoners of war and slaves. If he found little or no occasion to satisfy hla thirst for blood outside, he did not hesitate to turn his harem into a shambles, continues the merciless Dr. Genthe. I find that he sometimes killed aa many as twenty of his wives in a day or night, hla young sons being forced to assist him. To his hoys he taught the art of murder methodically and reported with satisfaction thnt little Sidan killed a slave when scarcely seven years old. Sidan might have rivaled hla father in the destruction of human life If Ismail had not condemned him to death at the age of 1(. Strange to say, our noted specialist In independence disagrees with himself in fixing a time when the Filipino child can be trusted to walk alone. Hla first estimate made only a few weeka ago at a Cincinnati banquet, named 100 or 150 years as the earliest safe moment to trust this infant Industry on its feet.
