One of the cleverest and most daring escapes ever made from the state prison at Folsom was engineered successfully by Convict Charles Murray, who was serving a term for grand larceny, committed in Ban Francisco. Murray is about 25 years old, and had been In the prison about a year He was working with the rock crusher gang and by some means secured a suit of clothes, a black soft hat, a white shirt, and an old pair of trousers, patched, and a dark vest. He found time to don these clothes, and after securing a monkey wrench and a rule, swung down to the railroad track and walked up the river to the dam, stopping occasionally to take measurements of poles, wiring, piping and other objects. Murray took his time at his simulated task, and chose the path between the canal and the river, so that he would not have to pass through the gates and undergo the close scrutiny of the guards. The latter, believing him to be an employe of the Folsom Power company, examining the electric lines, allowed him to pass without challenge. His escape was not discovered until several hours later, thus giving him plenty of time to get clear away. ATHLETES COMPETE. AUSTIN, Texas, May 20.
