PRESBYTERIAN8. MOBILE, Ala., May 19. The annual session of the General Assembly of the Southern Presbyterian church was called to order today by the retiring moderator, Rev. Abner C. Hopkins, D. D.. of Charleston, W. Va. About two hundred commissioners were in attendance, half being ministers and half ruling elder. They represented about eighty presbyteries and more than 1,000.000 communicants, scattered variously over the states of Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas and Missouri and Indian Territory. SOUTHERN CHICAGO. May 19. Mrs. Laura Ebberts, sole heir to the Bradley estate, and member of one of Chicagos oldest families, has been held to the criminal court, after confessing to repeatedly picking the pockets of her friends. Mrs. Ebberts lives in a handsome home In the fashionable district of the south side. At one time she was prominent In society and a woman of considerable Influence. In recent years, f her relatives say, she has been addicted to the use of drugs. She has been separated from her second husband for several years. Mrs. Ebberts was first arrested by store detectives two weeks ago. She gave her name as "Fannie Brown, and refused to disclose her residence. She pleaded guilty to the charge of stealing 25 cents from a woman, and paid a fine and disappeared before she was recognised. She was arrested by detectives of another departkneRt store yesterday and attaches of the police court recalled her former appearance. Tex., May 19. The General Assembly of the Cumberland DALLAS. Presbyterian church convened in Dallas this morning. It Is estimated that the attendance is over 500. The commissioners represent presbyteries In the territory extending from Pennsylvania to California and from Iowa to Louisiana. The sermon of the retiring moderator occupied most of the opening session. At the opening session telegrams of congratulation were exchanged with the Presbyterian General Assembly which began its session In Buffalo today. The consolidation of the two denominations, which has been agitated for years, is one of the foremost matters to receive attention at the present assembly. It Is expected that both assemblies will take action favorable to the proposed amalgamation. Other matters affectipg the doctrine and discipline of the church will be considered and acted upon during the week or ten days the assembly will be In session.
