BOB KENYON CANNON, EDITOR. Presenting "You Song Illustrator, Never Spoke to Me Like That ALLEGED CHURCH INFLUENCE IDAHO. IN Calvin Cobb, publisher of the Boise Statesman, the leading Republican paper of Idaho, has testified very pointedly before the senate committee concerning the attempts of Idaho politicians to secure the influence of Mormon church leaders. Whether the presiding authorities of the , church have been engaged in the use of such influence is not the question for present discussion; but that certain politicians of Idaho have sought this assistance is beyond successful dispute. Furthermore, it will not be sincerelyLJ and. intelligently denied that certain local officials of the church, resident in Idaho, have reinforced their own meagre influence by conveying the impression that they have been supported in the - instructions which they have made by the general auth or i ties of the church at Salt Lake. Mr. Cobb merely stated a matter of public notoriety, in Idaho, when he testified concern ing the attempt to extort pledges from W. E. Borah, Republican senatorial candidate; pledges which Borah declined to give, with the result that be was defeated. Mr. Cobb might have gone further if the proprieties had permitted. He might have told how Sen ator Hey burn, a Republican was whipped into line; how Heyburn, formerly the bitterest opponent of the Mormon church, was once defeated for the senate and largely through the efforts of church leaders in that state; how Heyburn, after Borah's refusal to make the blind pledges which were demanded, himself made them and received in return the votes of Republican Mormons in the legisla- dis-inguish- 4 ADMISSION 10 CENTS. 4 & YOUNG, 50c, 75c, 31-0- 0 and $1.50. It is to be hoped that the official who mikes the report of the case will use only the names of John Doe and Richard Roe in discussing the culprits, and, furthermore, that if any of the congressmen find that the cap is their size, they will not be in too much of a hurry to put it on. Inasmuch as Mr. Cobb was not a princi pal in these transactions, his testimony was very properly limited by the committee at Washington. Mere public notoriety is not sufficient to prove the facts. Ogden, entering now upon an era of greater growth, shouldact at once. This city needs a municipal water system, with ample resources of water for the time when Ogden will have thrice her present population. It is idle to expect the present private company endangered as it is by possible litigation, to make additional investments for water supply. That work, if done at all, should be performed by the city. It is deplorable neglect if Ogden shall find herself as Salt Lake is now in each summer season quite unable to meet the proper water demands of her growing population. Wisdom today will be worth millions of dollars twenty years hence. APRIL 23, 19 0 JOURNAL, SATURDAY, PAINE HURST Dry Goods BRING THIS AD WITH YOU. Try Our Hosiery It Wears |
