The authorities of Washington county and the town of JuiiMqinrt have interfered with the Holiness society's revival at Deal's island Just in time to prevent at least one murder, and aa the better class of the inhabitants believe, a wholesale slaughter of Innocents as sacrifices to the new faith. Upon complaint of John A. Beal, the seleading citizen of the Island, the ff Deputy-Sherilectmen of Jonesiiort sent SatFrench to the island last urday night, and the officers arrived Beal Just in time to rescue Frank of mob frenzied a of hands from the Holiness disciples, who had bound and blindfolded him and were pounding him unmercifully in the Effort to cast out a devil. Also, as the neighbors believe, not an hour too soon to prevent Mrs. Itea and the Holiness band son from killing her as a sacrifice demanded by the Lord. When the sheriff reached the Island he found the Beal residence locked and barred while a noisy ceremony was going on within. He burst open a door and found Frank Beal on the floor bound and blindfolded, and a crowd of twenty fanatics puinmeling him savngely and uttering strange cries. Sheriff French wus immediately attacked by the men. women scratching and punching him, while his clothing was torn and his lantern smashed. Drawing his revolver, he backed into a corner and ordered the crowd to get out, which they did, fearing his revolver. Then he arrested Mrs. Beal and took her to Jonesport, where she was adjudged insane and sent to Bangor asylum. The whole population, with a few exceptions, appears to have gone insane over the new religion brought to the Island by the Holiness society, which originated in New Brunswick and has its main headquarters at Lubec. There are, or have been, on the islnnd, two ministers of the faith. The creed requires the converts to Impoverish and humllate themselves, giving all their money to the ministers as the representatives of God, and casting away all other valuables. The lenders seemed to possess a hpynotic Influence over the 300 Islanders, most of whom are Ignorant and superstitious fishermen, and strange doings have been witnessed of late, rivaling the most fantastic performances of Millerite days. Cows, Sheop, oxen, goats, dogs, and cats have been butchered and their blood sprinkled about the church building and upon the congregation, while traders have given away their stocks of goods, and valuables have been cast into the sea. At a recent meeting the faithful, at command of the ministers, flung their watches nnd jewels upon the floor and trampled upon them. seven-year-o- ld ' WILD MAN IS THE SENSATION Movement ie Spreading Has Reached the tical Stage. post-morte- er -- ante-morte- m ture state. While lauding Pope Pius VII. for re fusing Napoleon's demand that a dl vorce be granted Jerome Bonaparte from Miss Patterson of Baltimore, he said: When we contemplate a land where one state Is founded on polygamy and forty-foother states tolerate sue cessive polygamy through divorce, which Is worse than simultaneous polygamy, because it gives no fixed status whatever to women a land In which 300,000 divorces have been granted in twenty years well mny w turn to Pius VIL and his heroic stand FREE OFFER!.
