When the hour mentioned urrlved none of the machines were in operation, must of them having been removed. An Independent investigation made by the Journal early today disclosed the fact that in four saloons on lower Twenty-fift- h street the machines had not been removed, but In some instances turned towards the wall and in others covered over with bartenders' aprons. This not a compliance with the law and it should be seen to that this evasion is corrected. In fairness it should be stated that most of the aalonkeepers recognized the letter of the law and refrained from again introducing the machines. It Is well known that Judge Howell and the authorities Intend to vigorously enforce the inw and the hasty compliance of the saloonkeepers with the order Issued yesterday saved them from prosecution. A meeting of saloonkeepers was held last night and was largely attended by members of the trade. The meeting was strictly private and the reports circulated of what transpired are varied and conflicting. It is stated by some that the meeting was solely for the purpose of forming a protective and fraternal union; others that slot machines and Sunday closing was discussed, and that ths Intention was to make test cases on both issues. It is understood, however, that no definite action was taken, the meeting being adjourned until Wednesday night. WEDDING BELLS. and Miss Edith Last Marritd Tavay Georgs F. McGonagl F.
