But it will be a hard matter to raise sufficient capital from the multitude of people Interested to cope with the big four who now have the stockmen In their grip. I have been In the cattle business for fifty years and ought to know something of the situation. I can say to you truthfully that the condition of the market Is as bad today as it was twelve years ago when the price went down to $11 and $13 per head and which was supposed to be the lowest price that it could possibly reach. The condition of the cattle business is such today there is not a buyer of cattle In the state, and farmers are compelled to ship east and take what they can get" he concluded. The following interview with a prominent cattle man from Idaho Is taken from the Boise Capital News. It shows that Republican prosperity is getting its work In on the cattlemen: The Hon. William Burke of Blaine county, member of the last legislature and a veteran cattleman In the state, takes a pessimistic view of the cattle situation. There is no better authority in the state on cattle than Mr. Burke and what he says on the subject Is always of Interest The cattle situation Is In a demoralised condition, he said this morning. Two years ago an average herd was worth at least 125 a head. Today the same herd Is not worth to exceed 512 to 115. You can readily see what this decline in price means to the cattlemen of Idaho. There is no reason for this decline except that the packing business controls the market- The retail price of meat remains the same as It was a year ago in the eastern markets. Since that time fifty-tw- o meetings have been held, those for 1861 to 1865 inclusive being omitted on account of the great disturbance consequent on the civil war. Of the body of men who met in Philadelphia In 1848 there are alive today: Samuel L Abbot of Boston, Martin H. and Wolcott Boyce of Coopersburg Gibbs of Newport The constitution which was adopted at the Philadelphia meeting remains today in all its essentials, and Ita first clause sets forth the broad objects for which the association waa formed. The association showed a fluctuating membership from its foundation until 1875; then gradually Increased until 1892, when It numbered 2,037. There was a slight falling off In the next six or seven years, but the increase began again In 1900, and It now numbers over 4,000. The names of nearly all the prominent scientific men of America are to be found in the volumes of the proceedings of the association, and many of the greatest achievements of American science have been first announced at the association's meetings. ,.
