Show UTAH STATE JOURNAL, DAILY 4 but it is of all papers most weak when it glosses over cruel wrong anj national coven ant breaking, merely to preserve a little partisan political favor for the party temporarily in favor with its masters. UTAH STATE JOURNAL J. COUNTY CANNON. EDITOR. A That estimable journal, the Deseret News, complains that it has been lectured and criticised in these columns. In this it refers to an CHAPTER OF TRUST PROCEED INGS article appearing herein last week under the The News is far title of Strange Ethics. too self abnegating in its complaint. No one in Utah would bo so irreverent as to lecture the News upon ethics or any other sub ject; and while others may at times criticise harshly there was no such attempt in these columns. The editorial of the News on the Panama matter was printed in full and the most mild mannered comment was made thereon. If the ethics of the News were good, it should feel grateful for having publicity accorded to them and for hav- ing emphasis given to them by a respectfully expressed difference, even though the commentator may not agree with its Strange How easy it is for the trusts to dupe congress and the country is shown by recent revelations made in the ship building trust case. Certain evidence produced in the investigation of that trust related to the Bethelehem steel company which had been merged into and which was a basis of the ship building trust. The Bethlehem steel company had been supposed to be the one prominent outstanding rival of the steel trust of the United States. It now appears that in 1902 the Bethlehem steel company was controlled by J. P. Morgan and company as trust itself was controlled by that the steel trust had n0 rival and them; the Bethlehem company was merely pretend ing to stand out in order to give the appearance of independence and competition. The manner in which this could be made profitlble Kas demonstrated the other day by witnesses who showed that the steel trust and the Bethlehem steel company each put in a bid for armor plate to the government. It did not make any difference which com-- 1 pany received the order, the trust got the profits; and therefore the trust simply designated one or the other of the bidding concerns to make the lower of the two figures and thus secure the contract. The government has been robbed for years by this armor plate business, the manufacturers in this country! cbar(,;njr hundreds of dollars more per foul for tbe plate umisbed our government than tbey charKed for the me late furnlshed to foreign governments with which to build ships to fi ht a3. To the contradictions made bv the News of tbe series of articles appearing in these col- umns concerning Panama only one answer is needed: A full exposure has been made herein of the treaty stipulations originally made er by our government and of the method by which this government secretly and cfliciently aided the conspirators in Panama to accomplish a bloodless insurrection in the interest and under the protection of the United States, at a time when we were treating with Colombia upon terms of perfect amity. No further argument is needed as to the facts. But if it would not seem sacrilegious, one night charge that in its attempt to divert attention from the ethical phase of the propo- sition tbc Iwv8 18 the qoestion.
