A writer in an exchange has this to say of country boys: The leaders of the city are conntry born. A recent cauvaaa of one of our large Eastern cities showed that eighty-fi- ve per cent were raised iu rural towns. 17 of onr 23 presidents came from the farm. Tho census of the students of our colleges and ' seminaries showed that the rural district aud villages is furnishing 85 per cent of our college stnduuta, The bran and nerve centers are not more dependant upon the related tissues than the city upon the rnral districts. A generation in the city is short. Life foices b urn out rapidly. The leaders are quickly succeeded by men from the country. They always have been, they always wul be. For this there are two reasons: One ia that the country air, food aud exercise ia essential to complete a healthy brain, ruddy cheeks, strong digestion, large veins iu which blood may run, have free course and be glorified iu strong thinking, are closely related to the herds, fields aud forests. There is s mathematical relation between a fiue physique and a firm intellectual tread. Good thinking stands with onefootof fiue fibre. Our factories, fouuderies, stores, railroad olfices are being filled with boys from the country. Theirs are health and endurance. The inheritance shall be theirs, ' for the fittest survive. A Stamp Licking Machine. Another man has iuvented a machine fot patting stamps on envelopes by machinery. It is a New Yorker this time. He eays h's machine will lick the stamps and stick them on at a tremendous rate without unpleasantness to the operator, and so securely that there will be no dangei of the stamps comiug off. There have been many cases of poisoning from licking a large number of stamps at one time, and inventors have been exercising their brains for years in the effort to find some way of getting the' stamps on letters without compelling the operator to make himself sick by apply, ing his tongue to the muciliage, Ex. It seems tons that after a person had been (misoned once from incessantly applying hia tongue to postage stamps lie would have gumption" enough afterward to lick tho envelope instead of the stamp. -- Ed. GOLDEN ance of food ia made of a ware WEDDING re- sembling the beautiful blue Delft are eeen in E. II. Me Bet h's hardware store. On the south gable end of the building is the likenees of a fine Cheater white in base relief, while on the opposite end is represented a litter of pigs drawing refreshments from the maternal fount of life. Garry informs ns (hat when he went to movu his pigs ont of the old home into the new, one of them fell over apparently dead, and being unable to revive the little porker, he referred the matter to the city scavenger, with power to act, and the pig was soon restored to hia former condition and transferred to his new abode. The German people of 1'ajson gave a very enjoyable reception in honor of the 50th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mis. Teter Cramer, at the First Ward meeting house last Tuesday afternoon and eveuiug. The aged conple have beeu residents of this city for several years and have a host of friends and acquaintance who desired to show tlieui the respect they felt for them, and decided oq this reception which was very appropriate for the occasion, as this was their Golden Wedding anniversary. The reception was arranged and carried out in first-cla-ss style. Name rone friends and relatives of the old coo pie were in attendance and took part in the program and all did what they could to make the affair a success. The old folks are well along in years, Mr. Cramer ia 73 years old and Mrs, Cramer baa attain, ed the ripe old age of 83, and is a most pleasant and agreeable old lady, while Mr. Cramer is spry as many men much younger than' he although he has always been a hard worker. The old conple enjoyed the reception very much and it was indeed gratifying to those who hail the affair in change to note the pleasure they manifested. It was a gathering that will long be remembered by all who attended, is Gods fitted Rlessing I feel that God hat bleated Dr. Acker with special knowledge to prepare that grand medicine called Ackei'a English Remedy for Throat and Lung Trooblea. It saves children every time when they are attacked by croup. -- 1 Remedy cured me completely. Before I clone, I want to tell you of my neighbor's boy, named Jobe Nana. The child had ouly beau missed fora few minutes, and the mother started to search for it and was horrified when she saw her offspring lying in the ditch with its head under the water. The body had evidently washed down from where it fell in and had lodged against a flume. A physician was summoned as soon as possible, and restorations applied, bat the little one was past all human aid. The parents were very mnch attached to the child and their grief over the lose of their idol is almost unbearable. They have the sympathy of the entire community tn their sail bereavement. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon. TASS Star" tin tags (showing small stars printed on under tide of tag), Horse Bhoe," J. The County board of health is taking action agaiust the proposed raising of Utah lake having adopted the following resolution: Whereas, It has come to the knowledge of tbe board of health of Utah county, Utah, that certain individuals and corpnrstious of Salt Lake City, end county intend to raise the waters of Utah lake to a point of Cva feet above Compromise ioint, which said point is a point thiee feet and three and a half i chea above low water mark, and W hereas, It ia the opinion of the said board of health that if said individuals or corporations or any person whatever raise the waters of Utah lake to a point of five feet above Compromise (mint or ra:se the waters of said lake to s point in excess of said Compromise point, it would cause numerous stagnant pools of water to form and raise the ground water nearer the surface of the earth, and prevent a proper drainage into BAid Utah lake, thereby favoring the generation aud spread of disease, and in onr opinion would le highly injurious to the public health of this connty. We, therefore, recommend to the county commissioners nf Utah county, Utah, that they take such steps as are necessary to prevent the raising nf the waters of said Utah lake, by any person or persons, whomsoever, to a (mint in excess of wifi A Compromise (toinL --L This Space Reserved For Gutheils New Bar ber Sho. $ Dr. IT.
