Korea lfluis of ia tho Spring Wheat for luriluua. Indiana Experiment Statlun Bulletin: Letters recently received at ths Experiment Station indicate that the wheat crop it seriously winter killed in some localities. Several correspondents wish to know whether It te feasible to ww spring wheal where winter wheat is badly damaged. In order to get the concensus of opinion on this subject, the following letter of inquiry was addressed to prominent farmers in several counties in ths state. In which it wu supposed spring wheat had been grown. Nina replies from six different counties have been received to date. Three correspondents state that they have had no experience and do not know that spring wheat hag been grown near them. Five state that spring wheat has bean grown in tha locality In previous years, but that lit culture Is now abandoned. These correspondents reside lu ths counties ol Pulaski, Caen, Tippecanoe, Newton, Benton and Vermillion. One correspondent In tbs south part of Newton county has grown spring wheat extensively in the paaL The six eorreapondenU who havo any knowledge of spring wheat agree that It la very liable to attacks of rust, blight and chinch bugs. One correspondent (in Vermillion county) states that persistent attempts on the part of a few farmers to grow spring wheat caused bad feeling in the neighborhood. Ths chinch bugs harbored by it destroyed much larger s areas of corn. therefore Spring wheat growing-habeen entirely abandoned in ths community. One correspondent would not sow spring wheat under any conditions. Tha one who has grown spring wheat extensively states that it aliould hs sown vary early 1st to tho 10th of March If possible; and that ths soil should not be stirred mors than two Inchon deep (better one inch), first, to avoid destroying tho remaining live plants of winter wheat, and, second, to permit tbs moisture to get to ths surface Ha alio advises rolling after sowing. Hs would not grow spring wheat two seasons in succession, because of its tendency to increase tho chinch bug. Another states that spring wheat should be sown on strong land, never later than ths end of March. Tbs limited experience of ths experiment station agrees with that of ths formers who havo reported. In respect to low yield and the poor quality of ths spring wheat and Its liability to rust aud Insect attacks. It does not seem wise, therefore, to grow spring wheat In Indiana, excepting, perhaps, as an experiment, end then only for a single season In locality. But what shall ba dons with fields of Injured wheat T I would suggest, first, that farmers wait until tho growing season opens. Perhaps the wheat will rally as it did last spring. Second, If ths wheat has been killed outright and ths soil Is Impoverished, prepare a fins seed bod with a disc or spring-toot- h harharrow, followed by a spike-toot- h row. Sow clover seed liberally and Immediately roll. Third, if considerable wheat remains, use only n spike-toot- h harrow, which will not seriously disturb ths wheat planta, then sow clover seed as before, using ths roll or not, ns may seem best In caaa clover will not catch, end If It la desired to grow some other soil, rc-wlcrop, cow peas oon as the spring might ba sown frosts are over. This crop makes a strong growth, which should bo turned under before frost In tho fall Being a legume the cow peas would havo an excellent effect oa the soli. In addition to ths vegetable matter furnished. If it Is necessary to grow soms crop to bo harvested the same season, oats, potatoes, corn, millet or some-othe- r crop more inlted to tho Individual needs of the fanner may be grown; but It will bo decidedly better for tho soil lu most cases If some leguminous crop can be grown. Parties desiring to procure spring wheat or cow peas should consult tbe catalogues of ths seedsmen and not tho experiment station. W. UL i ng u Yla Wo Grands Western Kailway.
