Utah, with 449,396 population, has but 217 miles of concrete roads, which Is at the rate of 48 miles per 100,00. The coming legislature should not devote its time and ability to trivial things Buch as cigarettes and the eating of fish on Fridays, but should devise ways and means whereby Utah can build more and better roads. concrete roads, at least 10 feet Utah should build 400 miles of a long way towards linking would This next fire go the wide, during years. up every Important center of population with Salt Lake City with a highway that is serviceable 365 days of the year; not only that but complete within her borders the various transcontinental routes and Important routes connecting other states. How much would such a program cost? A mile of concrete road, 10 feet wide, will cost about $20,000 and 400 miles would cost $8,000,000. This amount spread over a period of five years would be at the rate of $1,600,000 a year. this Federal aid accruing to the state would undoubtedly finance one-hal-f amount How could we raise the other half other than by bonding? First By a general tax. Considering the assessed valuation of the state to be $700,000,000, to raise $800,000 would necessitate a tax of 1.14 mill or $1.14 for each $1000 of valuation. Second By distributing this expense over the 78,000 motor vehicles in the state, increasing the license tax by $10.30 on each car. Third By Increasing the gasoline tax so that the tourist could help pay the bill. Assuming that each of the 78,000 motor vehicles in the state run 6,000 miles per year and that a gallon of gas will propel each vehicle 15 miles and also that each of the 100,000 tourists who come to our state each year or who should come spend three days in the state and consume 10 gallons of gas per day, an increased gasoline tax of 2.76 cents per gallon would do the trick. Fourth By any combination of these, as for example: d Raising by direct tax, by increasing, the license fee on all cars by $3.50 per car, or the equivalent, and d by increasing the gasoline tax by one cent a gallon. y high-qualit- one-thir- one-thir- d one-thir- Earn Xmas Money patents Our Toy display this year is more complete than ever before.
