Show THE ARGUS. 14 CONCENTRATES. The De Lamar gold mine in Lincoln county. New, has been started up again. The'output of the mine is nearly 300 tons daily. The Leadville strike has been declared off by the miners. The struggle has been a long and hard one and has entailed heavy losses on all concerned. It is claimed that the loss to the camp has been.no less than and the maintenance of the troops has added much to the taxation of the State. In January the copper product of the United States was about 39,500,-00- 0 pounds, same as December productions, while foreign mines produced only 14,781,000 pounds, a decrease of 2,664,000 pounds. Is it any wonder then, that foreign capitalists are so eagerly seeking copper deposits in this country. The monthly output of the Baker City, Ore., camp is placed by the $4,-000,00- Spokesman-Revie- w 0, at from $160,000 to $170,000, and it says that the principal producing mines are the Virtue, producing $30,000 a month ; Bonanza, $18,000; E. & E. $25,000; North Pole, $15,000 ; White Grouse, $10,000 ; Baisley and Elkhorn, $10,000; Red Boy, $10,000. There is being mooted the question whether or not mineral claims may be located within the boundaries of the forest reserves, recently set apart by Presidential proclamation. If they may, or if it is the desire of the Government that this shall, be allowed, the question should be speedily settled by Congressional enactment at this special session. A delay can only lead to confusion, and the miners are already overburdened with that in respect to the laws. The Nevada legislature has passed an act providing that all State deeds or patents to lands shall contain a provision expressly reserving all mines that may exist in such lands, and the State disclaims any interest in mineral lands selected by the State on account of any grant from the United States. This act is to prevent all controversy regarding the title to mining claims discovered upon lands selected by the State and disposed of to settlers or speculators. At a meeting of the mine owners in the new Ragged Top district, in the Black Hills, South Dakota, an organization has been formed mainly for the purpose of protecting themselves against professional claim jumpers and blackmailers. One of the articles of organization provides that whenever the mining ground of any member is jumped, he may appeal to the executive committee or any member close at hand for assistance and they shall immediately accompany the owner and eject the jumpers. The New Mexican Miners Association was organized last week at Santa Fe. The s and constitution of the California Miners Association were adopted. Antonio Joseph of Taos and F. A. Geynolds of Chloride were elected president and secretary, respectively. It was stated that the and object was to unite capitalists interested in New Mexico against the Western Federation of Miners, which has so long flourished at Lendville, Cripple Creek and other camps in Colorado. The United States post office authorities are doing good work in the East in making an investigation of the methods of certain mining brokers in New York and other Eastern cities, who advertise in local newspapers and receive money to invest in certain stocks. It is claimed that the inspectors find that they keep a set of books for mail orders and that these are carefuly doctored each day so that the victim is' certain to lose. Many complaints of fraud have been made and the Goverment will take steps to suppress them. There was more activity on the part of locators in doing the required assessment work before the end of last year than ever before. In a much smaller proportion of cases than usual did they trust to evading the law by making new locations. The professional jumper was in evidence but found poorer pickings than he did last year in all those States and Territories in which the State laws have not properly supplemented the federal statutes. After all the claim jumper is doing good missionary work in showing the necessity for good State and Territorial laws. by-law- mine-owner- s New York people have purchased for $80,000 gravel property in Wyom- ing, consisting of 1920 acres of placer ground, which averages from three to five feet in depth. This gravel is a lacustrine deposit from granite and very easy to wash, containing very few boulders, and those small in size. The gold, however, is very find in all that country in southern Wyoming MISCELLANEOUS. and northwestern Colorado, averaging in many deposits 1000 nuggets to one cent. However, it is not flaky, but in the shape of small nuggets, and comparatively easy to save with proper appliances. The Pioche Record, in speaking of the old Ely district, says that there are as good opportunities there now for mining as ever. Great niaing Boom is Predicted for Iron County. Iron County Record. A With the advent of spring a great mining boom is looked for in Iron county and State Line district in particular. WTe are reliably informed that a mill will be erected in Line City within two months, and if this proves true th9 new camp will soon come to the front and ere another year rolls round will be known as the Algreatest gold camp in the west. ready there have been shipments made that have netted the shippers handsome profits. The Ophir people have made shipments that have brought them from $100 to $500 a ton ; the Utah Spur has shipped ore that has netted its owners $110 a ton, and a number of other shipments have been made which were equally as good. But the State Line district is not the only section of Iron county that is likely to come to the front this summer. There are properties in the Pinto Iron Mining district, owned by energetic .mining men, who have already expressed their intention to develop these claims as soon as the weather will permit. The immense deposits of iron and coal are too well known to require any mention. Competent judges and experts who have visited the most important iron districts state that they have never seen the equal either in point of quality or quantity of the iron deposits of our county. There is something strange that so rich a mineral district should remain so long isolated from the outside world and unassisted by If the properties of Iron capital. county wTere in any other state than Utah they would be valued at millions of dollars and would be worked and developed as they deserve ; but as it is the claims are allowed to lie dormant or develop themselves, as you might say.. ; However, this state of affairs will not always continue, and when once the mines of Iron county have been touched by the magic finger of capital they will be second to none in the west.
