Show THE ARGUS. 4 who like to be sociable. The presence of Hon. George Q. Cannon at the Knutsford reception occasioned considerable comment, this being the first affair of the kind he has attended. Punch and other refreshments were served and the guests, in a very enjoyable mood, passed a decidedly pleasant evening. And thus the representative of Utah who endorsed Mark Hannas ticket and platform, who crossed swords continually with Senator Cannon, was received. Those who laud Senator Brown and his cause cannot consistently endorse Senator Cannon. They dwelt together in Washington in the same kind of harmony that existed between Senators Shoup ocratic Legislature and the Utah Democracy may well hide its head in shame for the child of its creation. The session is closed, let ut pray that another will not be called and that we may be permitted as as soon as possible to forget that such a blot as our second Legislature disfigures the fair name of Utah. LEGISLATIVE AFTERMATH. Logan Nation : The Legislature lias adjourned for which relief much thanks. Bingham Bulletin : Very few members of the late aggregation known as the Utah Legislature were welcomed home by their constituents, or will ever again be called upon to pose as lawmakers. Silver City Star : The greeting given Representative Wheeler by his fellow townsmen last Tuesday evening was spontaneous and enthusiastic. It was a fitting honor paid to our honest, capable and honored Representative. Park Record : The Legislature has adjourned. When it reconvenes about the most urgent work it will be called upon to perform will be to repeal some of the laws it passed at its last session that mining law, for instance. Manti Messenger: We dont like to say anything about Utahs recent Legislature. That body has not done much harm, aside from spending a good many thousand dollars of the peoples money, but it has done precious little good. Spain. With eyes that gaze into immensity The tigress nation sits beside the sea. Dreamy is she, and yet she does not sleep ; Black memories in her heart forever creep Of woe and greed and tortures dark and dire The inquisitions dungeon, rack and fire. Through the soft air that breathes of romance blest She hears the cry of conscience long suppressed. She heeds not, she whose day of joy and feast Is that which sees the death of man and beast. Cruel is she, and glories to retain The greed of power and the greed of gain. Sore twitchings fret her at the thought of one Who brought her glory. Italys great son, Columbus ! Honored name while time remains ; Yet loaded by her hand with galling chains. Yea, deepest of the thorns that vex her soul Is thought of that fair region lost to her control. What memories stir her of her dreams of old, Boundless dominion, subjects, power, gold ! In retrospect she sees bold Cortez' band Spread desolation through the Aztec land ; While Coronado scours the western plains And plants her banners o'er its wide domains; And Ponce de Leon finds the land, forsooth Where springs the fabled fount of endless youth. How stirred her cruel heart with joy untold At dark Pizarro's stores of blood-stainegold. What empires lay within her grasping hand, Yet all have slipped away like ropes of sand. To her, of those unrivaled, fair domains. But one small island as her own remains. She hears a voice that calls across the sea It is a peoples cry for liberty ! Like Pharaoh of old, relentless, slow, She answers back : I will not let you go. Silent, yet deeply moved, the nations stand, Waiting the loosing of that cruel hand ; Waiting till Cuba breaks her iron chain. And the new world at last is free from Spain. Axxa R. Hexdersox. and Dubois of Idaho. Incredible reports have been coming in this spring from the desert country of the southwest. The richness of Randsburg is being forgotten in the dazzling splendor of more recent discoveries. Thirty miles north of Yuma extensive deposits have been discovered running from two thousand to three thousand dollars per ton. Sand panning out from a dollar to a dollar and a half per pound is blowing in the face of the traveler, and the country is said to be rich as deep as one cares to go. Another report values the sand dunes about Yuma at four thousand dollars per ton. Some of the most unreasonable stories ever heard are being told of the Colorado desert and no one seems d Enquirer Senator Smoots church utterances to the contrary notwithstanding, the comments of the press of the State are that the Legislature just ended does not all compare favorably with past sessions. Pulpit praise will not be able to convince the public otherwise. Provo : Tintic Miner : The citizens of Utah regardless of party are proud of the record our young Governor made during the last session of the Legislature. His vigorous vetoes have done much to prevent vicious legislation, and had his advice always been followed, the record of the Legislature would have been a vastly more pleasing one. Bingham Bulletin: Governor Wells nobly came to the rescue of his friends the miners, but the hayseed Legislature insisted that mining communities do not know what is- for their own good, and passed the alleged mining law over his head. Now, the boys should back up the opinion of the Governor by contesting the law and knocking it out. - Brigham City Bugler : After having been in session more days than provided by law, the Utah Legislature has finally given up the ghost. It started in with a shout for economy; that it would do double wTork and adjourn long before the allotted time in order to save money to the tax payers of the State. How well it has kept these promises all now know. Of course it has done some good work, (probably accidental! but as a whole it has been a session of windy wrangling and cranky legislation. The people rejoice that the end is come, and that the light of this magnificent Democratic Legislature is now under a bushel. Tintic Miner : It is with a deep breath of relief that the people of Utah realize that the legislative session has closed, and yet the close comes too late to save many interests which have been sacrificed by the body of incompetent who in the main compose the second Legislature of the State of Utah. From the election of United States Senator to the farce comedy events of the close of the session, the work of the Legislature has been a continuous succession of mistakes and a continuous defeat of the will of the people. The Deseret News is very extravagant in its statesman whose term of praise of our gold-buoffice expired inauguration day last. In commenting editorially on the Knutsford reception the News says, among other things : g or es looked for and wave And Work. 0f prosperity due in the west is the one fact, so far developed, the advance in the price of Rio Grande securities. If nothing else can come to Utah in the guise of a beneficial much-advertise- d factor, in 1897, the fact that Rio Grande Western railroad bonds have very materially advanced and are at the premium of constant demand with no sales, is flateringly qualifying. The New York and London stock boards are in loud acclaim for this stock, but no holder seems willing to release his certificates at any price, however fancy. Knowing the Rio Grande Western as The Argus does, this is the first substantial evidence of Western true merit that has been made manifest up to date in 1897. Cumulative evidence that the Rio Grande Western company is doing more effective work than all other agencies of whatever kind combined in the line of proclaiming abroad the merits of Utahs unrivaled resources and' attractions, is again at hand. Reference is made to the booklet gotten out by the passenger department and treating on the great Tintic mining district. Mechanically, it is a gem, and the text is thoroughly and acceptably penned. In short, this effort of General Passenger Agent Wadleigh is the best that has yet appeared, none excepted. The general public should be, at least, appreciative of what the Rio Grande Western is doing for the advancement of Utahs material interests, just as the Denver & Rio Grande people have done and are doing in the way of promoting Colorado. prosperity and up-buildin- g Brown was warmly welcomed by his personal friends, his admirers, those who have an appetite for pie and a few Democrats Ex-Senat- or Brown at the Knutsford Hotel The reception to on Tuesday evening must have been highly gratifying to the gentleman who has had the distinction of serving the first senatorial term from the State of Utah. The reception was the most extensive affair of the kind yet given here to a retiring official, and was an occasion of thorough enjoyment by aU who participated ; and the number of these was very large. It was Mr. Browns lot to draw the short senatorial term, hence he was in office but little over a year. During that time he made a most excellent record, filling the position of United States Senator from Utah with a dignity and ability reflecting credit upon the State. The following from the Logan Journal indicates in what esteem a prominent Republican of that section is held by members of all parties : Joseph A. Smith of Providence is an applicant for the to Basle, Switzerland. As it position of U. S. consul-genermust necessarily be a McKinley Republican who gets the position, Mr. Smith has our best wishes. He is well fitted by nature and education for the position. al Mr. Smith is certainly an able gentleman, a scholar, a man of experience, and, as a consistent Republican, is entitled to some recognition from this administration.
