Saxey & A RAILWAY FROM GRAND JUNCTION TO SAN DIEGO. GRAND 'SCENERY. The .float Multiline Of All Hurt lily Mpeetnclcw Are Not Far From Prove. Once more the project of building a railroad in tbe cafion of the Colorado River 1ms come up for consideration, and this time in such deflnute shape that it would seem that before very 1 mg the undertaking would be actu ally begun. The project lias always been a very popular one with engineers, owing partly to the almost insurmountable obstacles to be over coae. The country is so wild, the mountains so high, the walla arising on both sides of the river so precipitous and so lofty, that the mere work of surveying this district lias been al most impossible. This, however, has at last buen accomplished, and it is now announced that the work is by no means as hopeleas as has always been supposed in fact, that it is perfectly feasible. In I860, Major lo well, of the United States Geological Survey, made his memorable trip down the Colorado River, he and his party being the only persons who bad ever succeeded in accomplishing this feat. Since then, several attempts have been made to accomplish this, but always fatally, and it was destined that this scientist should, for twenty years, hold the honor of being chief of the only party that had ever descended the entire length of the river. In 1889, a party of railroad men and surveyors started to make the descent of the river, and succeeded in reaching a point about the middle of the Marble Cafion, when desaster overtook them, and several of their number were lost. Since that time, however, the rest of the river has been traversed and examined, and the report of the chief engineer, Mr. Robert B. Stanton, has been banded in to the directors of tbe Denver, Colorado Cafion and Pacific Railroad Company. In spite of the loss ot life that has been met with in making the surveys, the report of the engineer is favorable, and he believes the work is practicable, not only from an engineering expense of standpoint, but building it will hot btf so great as to render the work impossible. The entire leuatjTcTTheIoradols about 2,000 miles, and it is navigable as fisr-a- Caliville, u distance of some 600 miles from its tnouth at the Gulf of California. The object of the present road is to connect the coal fields of Colorado with the Pacific coast. It is at present difficult to procure cheap fuel on the Pacific coast, much of the fuel used theie being brought by steamer from foreign ports. It is proposed to start the new road from Grand Junction, Colorado, which point is already connected with the coal fields by the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad. The new road has been surveyed from that town to the Gulf of California, and also from the town of Yuma to San Diego, the most southerly seaport of California, this being a distance of 100 in.les, and affording excellent communication with the Californian coast. The general survey has been divided as follows. Starting from Grand Junction and proceeding toward the mouth of the river, we find the subdivisions to be as follows: tatlje a Miles. 140 Tbe Grand River Cataract and Narrow Cufions 64 157 Glen Cafion 62 Marble Cafion Attorneys and Counselors at Law. 217 Cafion Grand 11 From Grand Cafion to Needle 161 Dp slain orer Bail Bnilliii, 245 From Needles to Gulf a over a thousand of total Utah. making Oity miles. It Is more then 200 miles long, from 6 to 12 miles wide, and from 5,000 to 6,060 ft. deep There are in the world valleys which are longer and a few which are deeper. There are valleys flankeb by summits loftier then the paiisides of the kaibab. Still the Grand Cafion. is the Bublimest thing on earth. A few weeks ago she and a young man whose name she apparently bears were boarding in the house of a sport' ing woman named Elsie St. Omer. The madam suddenly lost, or claimed she lost, 3263 from a bureau drawer whare she kept her deposits. Just about this time Gussie was going to start to Kansas City, and Cooper, her young man companion, for Denver, Elsie charged Gussie with stealing the money. She was arrested as was the man. On tbe hearing the sole evidence against Gussie was the charge that in paying for their tickets they gave the broker a certain five dollar bill which it was claimed was in the lot of money kept in the drawer. This bill had been taken' by one of in course tbe house inmates of her transactions, and owing to its peculiar appearance was thought to be spurious, and so several of tbe occupants of the house gave it a close examination and claimed to be able ro identify It. It also bo happened that this was the only bill taken by tbe broker that day, and he had it when called on to see whgyr the defendants had paid for thz- - tickets a thing Uiy cculd easily have done had they processed as much money as is ok.
