REPARE ye for the second coming of the Christ; hour la twelfth shout to strike. Captain Charles A. L. Totten, West Pointer, mathematician. writer, inventor and savant, says the human race stands upon 'an ominous threshold and that the March witness next will Lord, second the advent of which, to ordinary Intellects, means the end of the world. In the fullness of truth, he continues, "it means the end of man's haphaiard, irresponsible methods and system. The iron crown will be knocked off mortal brows and with an 'Iron rod immortal hands will thenceforth direct such human affairs as may survive the crisis. If this be not plain, God help the English understanding. Captain Charles A. L. Totten, who predicts the second advent of Christ In the year 1899)4, is called by the world a dreamer, a man of line, but in one line of misdirected, Intellect Yet as a matter of fact Captain Totten Is one of the few men whose prophesies, wild as they appear, are studied carefully and approached with respect by the scientific men of the age. They are read and studied perhaps not with any shade of belief in them, but because of the depth of the research which they display and of the mathematical mind, analytical almost beyond precedent of which they give evidence. Totten's name Is respected all oyer Europe. This artillery officer bases his predictions on the Bible and mathematics. 'Some have aald that Totten makes a Bible of his calculus. He made a prophecy seven years ago and said that Just before the end there would be a military era. The war, he now says, is the fulfillment of tho prediction. There was a strong hint in the foretelling that an Anglo-Saxo- n people would be arrayed against another race in war. Behold Russia the fulfillment the second I and England are to dispute and perhaps go to war over the eastern question. Lo! fulfillment, in part, the third! Will fulfillment the fourth route with the second advent? Totten says of himself, his prophecy I am a Christian and and his work: am orthodox on the apostolic basis. I have studied the Bible with searching scrutiny. Before the bar of whatever mathematical and logical ability I possess, I hare weighed, measured and numbered much of its historical prophetical chronology, and find It to be without possible flaw. It Is a perfect and stupendous system; a consecutive one, and Its evolution cannot have The been other than supernatural. year 1899)4 March, 1899 is the end of the age and the beginning of the millennium, that is, of the seventh, or Sabbatic, thousand years. an Then Captain Totten submits "ominous exegesis or chronological sermon upon a deeply concerned all former generations of Christians. He declares that Christs words as given In Luke, 21: 82, Verily, I say unto .this generation shall not pass away until all be fulfilled, has been this mistranslated. He declares should be "that and the promise of the Savior refers to the far future. "That generation is the one now on earth and which will view the end next spring. The captain says that history has no parallel to the generation of which the present is the final year, Spanish-Americ- an ten says that each generation is three score and ten years; that the generation began a. m. 8991. At this time the Savior was a lad teaching in the temple and the generation was seventeen years gone. Then he declares that when this generation, the shall have been similarly eighty-fiftgone seventeen years the end will have been recorded as a finished fact These figures, he says, are ominously dreadful and there is no escape from them save under the cloak of recklevs ridicule. Around the number 153, according to Captain Totten, clusters all the chronology of scriptuie. He goes into this at length to clinch the statement He bases the prophecy of the ending of sll things next March largely upon the parable of the householder who sent the laborers into the vineyard at the different hours (Matthew 20), and paid each a penny Irrespective of the time he labored. The hours spoken of by Jesus are according to Captain Totten, each 153 years and a fraction long. There were twelve hours altogether. A calculation makes twelve by and the fraction 1.836)4 years and brings us to the year of the world 5827)4. "When human calculations fall they do so because of our Inability to catch the smaller fish which pass through the meshes of the mind. If we are able to catch 1899 A. D. 153 great fishes (John, 21: 11) the draught Is ominous enough to make us feel the nearness of one whose advent we expect, although, like the apostles, we may not dare ask him Who art thou? It is concerning these things we conjure our race to think, for never in the history of man stood Adam's posterity upon so dreadful a thres- one-nin- th one-four- th 94 Orders Ars Orders. Have you any children?" asked the porter. I have," replied the prospective hold." A reference to the chapter and verse of SL John named will show that when Simon Peter drew the net to the land at the Savior's command there were 153 great fish in it. After saying that in the householder parable each hour mentioned Is 153 years and a fraction long Captain Totten says that of the first hour was up at the presentation of Christ in the temple; that had passed at the crucifixion and that during the remainder the new testament was written. This Is the first hour of the parable in which "the householder went out to hire laborers into his vineyard. The Savior passes over the second hour without mentioning it, but the third sees the householder going out and hiring more workmen. Captain Totten fixes each hour as the time of sdme historical event of immense interest to Christianity. He says: "The third hour, 8x153, equals 459, the year Rome told Britain to care for herself. The Saxons and Goths were converted when the fourth hour struck. In the parable the Savior skips two hours and Captain Totten says it is no wonder that he did so, for the times taken up by those hours (years) were exceeding evil. At the sixth hour, when the householder brought In more laborers, "Alfred the Great translated the Bible into our own tongue The Norsemen were converted to Christianity and In later years came into England and rounded out our racs. The Savior, the military prophet believes, did right In passing over the seventh and eighth hours, the time of the "dismal middle ages. The ninth hour is tolled off and Wyckliffe, the morning star, Knox, Hubs and Jerome of Prague, hear its tones. The English reformation is dawning. At the close of this hour we find Luther, Tyndall and Melancthon. Nothing Is heard of the tenth hour In the Savior's prophetic parable and "it was well left unmentjoned, for it was the age of backsliders. The eleventh hour brought honest laborers Into the vineyard.
