Show flailing Queer When a queen is balled, youll find a bunch of bees aa large aa a hickory nut or larger, that aeem to cling together In a very solid manner. You can't pull the bees apart, aif you may roll the ball over and over, says Texas Farm and Ranch. If a strange queen is thrown into a bive. she is usually balled, and as nearly as we can make out, the process is eomethlng like this: The bees the queen at various points till she is entirely surrounded, then other bres seize the ones that have hold of ths queen, and in this position they remain fixed for hours, until the queen is dead. If a strange worker is throvn Into the hive, she isnt treated the same as a queen, and nothing but a q ieen is ever balled. The worker may le bitten or stung, but never balled. The balling bees generally make a hissing sound, unlike tlie noise they make at any other time. Whether that proceeds from anger or what, we do not know. Sometimes hees will hull their own queen, usually for the sake of protecting her. In the middle of a had of her own bees, it certainly seems slic ought to he safe from foes. You can not pull the bees apart so as to free the queen, nnd if you should succeed in getting some of the been away, ix should manage to get the queen loot, the bees will Immediately aeize her again. Perhaps the quickest way to get the queen free is to throw the hr 11 Into cold water. The little miscreants will scramble to get out of the watir as lively as they can, and at onre seem to forget all about the queen, le&vljg her to her own fate. Water la not always at hand, and you can blow smoke upon the ball. If you blow hot smeke upon them, as usually you 'will if jou hold the nozzle close enough, you will at once seal the queens doom, for the hees will promptly sling her; but if you hold the smoke at a distance uid keep up a strong stream of cool smeke, the bees will soon conclude they wint to And some place with a purer BEGINNING OF PENNSYLVANIA OIL INDUSTRY. The best yields were from varieties which had bren grown for several years, either In the neighborhood or In southern Kama. No very early maturing variety gave a satisfactory yield. In general ihe best yields were from planting In the first half of April. Five out of six plats planted with corn planter g(v larger yields than corresponding p;at planted with lister. Except In )ery r early planting deep planting gave results than did shallow. Larger yields of both grain and stalks were secured by thicker planting than is usually practiced. In the thicker plan;ing the ears were smaller, but total weight was greater. A full, uniform stand la believed to be one of the best helps o good yields. Shallow cultivation after planting gave larger yields than did deep. A plat which had no cultivation except scraping the surface yith a hoe gave a larger yield than any plat given deep cultivation. Deep cultivation while the corn plants were quite small did no harm. Level cultivation seemed better, than ridging. In all cases the land had been plowed deep aud put in good condition at time of planing. Planted the first week in April. urn was In good condition for feeding the first week in July. When husked from the standing stalks September 1, the average percentage of moisture in the grain was nearly 23, Well dried erifc corn usually has from 10 to 12 per cent of moisture. When well dried not more than 68 pounds of ears were required to make a bushel of shelled corn. The most rapid groin tl of the stalks was between May 20 uml Ju o 8. More than four Inches of growth was made In a single day. The greatest growth In a week was fifteen inches. The best yield of well dried corn wai at the rate of CO bushels per acre on upland soil. stock-placin- T is related of a discouraged pioneer resident of what i . j p :?f Did a .JT7 rjTW jtjresr y. The base of operation was a piece of land secured from Brewer, Watson Sc Co., taking in the oil spring well near the mill. This company was not a sucg cess, except perhaps In the sense. Three years later, primarily, through the efforts of James M. Townsend, a New Haven (Conn.) investor is the stock of the original company, there was a reorganization in the name of the Seneea Oil company. The land of the Pennsylvania company was subleased on a royalty to the new organization. The latter sought to develop the property by means of trenches and other crude methods, but' was unsuccessful. At this juncture Mr. Bissell happened to notice In the window of a New York drug store a circular descriptive of a bottled preparation called Kiers Petroleum, which came from Balt wells at Tarentuin, Pa., and had been put up by S. M. Kler, a Pittsburg refiner. The circular set forth that fluid was found at a depth of several hundred feet in sinking the suit wells. This Incident suggested to Mr. the idea of drilling into the rock for oil. The other stockholders were favorably Impressed with the suggestion, and on May 1, 1858, the company sent to Titusville, to take charge of its work. Col. Edwin L. Brake, who had been a railroad conductor at New Haven, Conn., and was a small Investor in the oil stock. His Balary was to be $1,000 a year, and the company had provided him with $1,000 with which to go ahead with the work of sinking a well. The little village afforded but few of the necessary equipments for the work, and the nearest railroad station, Erie, Pa., was forty miles away. Presently his funds were exhausted, and the company, losing faith in the enterprise, and becoming indifferent, failed to advance him more money. It was then that Col. Drake's troubles began. The drillers he had engaged failed to appear. This was due In part to the report spread over the regions that Drake was crazy in believing that o! would be found by drilling Into th( Jec-- t BORING FOR GREASE. re- - whicb in reached him rich deposits of scoine way, possibly of eoal oil across the Canadian border, to cause him to leave Oil Creek and repair to Canada. It is not surprising tnat a resident of the then undeoil regions veloped Pennsylvania should have been easily drawn elsewhere. The regions were a wilderness. The chief arena of the subsequent oil activities, the Oil Creek valley, from Titusville southward to the Alleghany river, or to the present site of Oil City, a distance of about twenty miles, wu practically uninhabited. Titusville was a little lumbering village. It is not a matter of wonder, therefore, that the disheartened settler of whom the Incident referred to Is related was so easily attracted to Canada. One of the objectionable features of the farm he left, according to the story, was thi oozing of a greenish scum to the surface of the streams, so much that at the point where his horses and cattle drank It was necessary to construct a surface dam, in order that the animals might drink without being compelled to dip through the noxious deposit floating on the surface of the water. This floating substance was of an oily nature and long had been used In the war paints, rites and medicines of the Indians of the region, from whom It derived its name Seneea oil No thought, however, of the Immensity of the supply or of the multiplied uses to which it might be put was entertained by anyone. .The oily wealth the reetlese settler sought in 'I r Al-sl- ke The lean hog takes In the market and fo does the fat hog. As the seed of clover is only half the sue of common red clover, from four to five pounds per sere is nearly as good as nlue or ten pounds usually sown of red clover. But It Is better to put on a little heavier seeding than this, as the Alsike clover, perhaps because of its small seed, is more likely to bo destroyed before the plant gets firm hold of the soil. It does not pay to seed light with any kind of clover, nor yet with grass. The space not occupied by the valuable crop will not be vaeunt, for weed seeds are always ready fur Just such opportunities. Mammoth or pea vine clover, as it is often culled, has a slightly smaller seed than the medium red clover. But It grows so strongly that a less amount of seed of the mammoth clover will give a seedto exclude everything ing close enoughwere greater liberality else. Meantime, in the form of the despised scum oozing from tue old deOil he farm Creek had serted, it was making the effort nature afforded to force upon the world more fitting recognition of the volume and value of It stored in the hidden natural reservoirs from which it came. This oil found its way to the surface at varisus points along the creek flats, notably In the vicinity of the lumber mill of Brewer, Watson & Co., per. haps a mile south of Titusville. Eventually a high value was put upon It for medicinal purposes, and the gathering of tt principally by the process of stalking It from the water with blankets became quite a profitable business. It also had a limited use as a lubricant, and a more limited use as an illumi-nain its crude state. In 1852 Dr. F. I. Brewer, of Ehenezer Brewer, of the firm mentioned, took a bottle of the oil to Prof. O. P. Hubbard, of college, at which institution Dr. Brewer had been a student. Prof. Hubbards verdl.t was that the product was valuable, but would not be found In sufficient quantities for commercial purposes. Some of the nil was also left with Prof. Dixio Crosby, of the same college. Like Prof, llubbnrd, he was Impressed with the value of the product and later sent his sou, A. H. Crosby, to Titusville, to make further l, investigation. In 1834 lleorge H. of the firm of Bissell & Evaleth. of New York. lawyers and promoters of stock companies, mining and otherwise, took a health trip to New Hampshire, and while there renewed the acquaintance with Prof. Crosby. The oil sub- nt Dart-m-xi- llis-sel- th CENTER rock. But his faith on this point was unshaken, after his study of the salt wells and other investigations of insanity only served to intensify his determination to demonstrate that the theory was correct. It was not until the middle of June, 1859, that he was able to proceed with the well. He was enabled to do so then, not through any aid rendered by the company, but through the sympathetic personal assistance of R. D. Fletcher and Peter Wilson, of Titusville. who provided him with local credit and indorsed at a Meadville hank (about thirty miles from Titusville) the paper on which he raised the necessary funds to go ahead with the well. Uncle Billy Smith and his two eons, drillers from the Tarentuin sast regions, came on to take charge of that part of the work, which was done at that time by the old spring-pol- e On process. Saturday, Aug. 28, 1839, the drill at the shallow depth of sixty-nin- e and a half feet, about thirty-fiv- e feet in the rock, dropped into a crevice as the days work was being finished, and the tools were pulled out until Monday morning. The folowing day (Sunday) the senior Uncle Billy, took a stroll driller, down to the well and saw what seemed to be oil within a few feet of the top. He dipped an improvised bailer Into the well and It came up filled with petroleum. Thus was the first oil well conceived aud completed. As has been indicated. it was not the Art' rteslan well in which oil was found. 5ut It was the first well sunk for oil. In According to latp statistics there are the United States 40,000 deaf mutes.
