Banks McKenzie is one familiar not only to the citizens of this city, but Is also n throughout Nevada. It is natural, therefore, that the news of his death when circulated on the streets this morning created a great deal of surprise on thr part of these most familiar with Dr. McKenzie's life, aud a most profound regret and sorrow. Dr. McKenzie has been indisposed for the lsst month or more, but hie illness was not considered of a serious nature until last Monday, when his condition became so critical that be wu removed from the house of Mr. Mulloy, where he had been stopping, to Si. Mark's Hospital. He wu delirious for the first after his removal to the day hospital, but yesterday morning relapsed into a comatose state, in which condition he remained until his death at 7 oclock thie morning. Congestion of the brain wu pronounced the cause of death by the hospital physicians. Dr. McKenzie wu born in Scotland in 1837, the year that Queen Victoria ascended the throne, and was 47 yean of age. His parent emigrated to America when he wu quite young and settled near Gloucester, Man., where the family still lives. Deceased sei ved lieutenant in the navy during the war of the rebellion, and was for a while in command of a gunboat on the Patomac, and received several severe wounds during the war. In January, 1880, Dr. McKenzie left Boston for the West for the purpose of inaugurating a temperance reform movement. lie went directly to San Francisco, and thence to Reno, Virginia City, and Canton. His plan was to organize reform dulis among the young men end he met with great success in Nevada towns, in several nf which large dubs were organized. After leaving Nevada he came to this city wli re he labored earnestly in tho tenqicrance cause for some lime anti succeeded in organizing a strong reform dub. The Opera House building wu started by Dr. McKenzie as a place of entertainment and recreation for this dull, but heavy capitalists were afterwards induced by the persevering eilorte of the projector to lake hold of it and the present beautiful end iinjKwing structure was the result.
