Owing to the dull times and the comparatively small amount of building done, the consumption this year will not be so great, but still it i and always will be of sufficient importance tu make the building stone question one of pnblic interest. There are some interesting tacts in with the sandstone supply of this city, which show how near the consumers came tu being placed at the mercy of a greedy monopoly. About two years ago a party of shrewd capitalists conceived the brilliant idea that it would he a tine thing for them to secure control of all the sandstone in the ol Salt Lake, charge their own (rice lor the commodity, luxuriate and grow fat, figuratively ssjsking, on Mudstone. They accordingly purchased a quantity of what is known as soldiers additional scrip, by mean of which they secured, under the about laws, 2,4UU seres uf land. This laud was indifiereul tracts located northeast and east of the city. It was suppisied by those who located it to include all the sandstone beds in the vicinity of Sail that would produce stone suitable for building purposee. A company was formed called the Kail Lake Hock Company, and all iienoas who were engaged in taking ruck from those lands were ordered oil. Several parlies, however, had opened up quarries in Georges Hollow and Spiers llollow, to the north and soutj) of Emigration Canyon, and their prior right wss purchased by the ruck company, the consideration given being $l,tki(i and a ten years lease on the property they were working, the company receiving a royalty of $1 per cord mi all rnck taken out. The company also required these men to agree, by written contract, to sell no rock for less than $13 per coni. Previous to this the irice had ranged from $8 to $10 per cord, and the first act of the company, after gaining exclusive control of the industry, was to follow in the footsteps of 11 other monopolies and raise the price. The Salt Lake Hock Company considered that it possessed sll the sandstone territory convenient to Salt Lake City, and expected, with good reason, to reap a rich harvest from its monopoly. But the dark hand of fate was raised against this little scheme. Some time during April last it was discovered thst there existed in Parleys Canyon, about two miles from its mouth and eight miles from this city, sandstone of the best quality suitable for building purposes y mid in inexhaustible quantities. A for the development of these quarries is now about to be organised and work has already been cimsideralde dune. It is to Im called the Messrs, Hock Company. National (j. V. Culiuer, Arthur Brown, M. K. Parsons, S. E. Allen and others are the gentlemen who compose it. A tramway ii to Im built along the side of the canyon, by mean of which the rock will be la- - taken io a point where Irausftared hi wagons, it is estimated that the cost of transportation to the city will not exceed $! per cord. The sandstone business, therefore, of being controlled by a monopoly, will be bleAed by healthy competition, i ml Indlders are to be congratulated. . 1 com-ian- ;J in iWr Lodge, Mun-n- a, succeedeil, in the Lulu Hurst exhi-iiiu- u, in holding the chair still fetr reral sccuuds, when it commenced to . k lO Aiidiiinnal reMirts from the scene of .e Little Hooky gold excilemeni cstab-,-.- i the fact that it is a swindle. The motion fur a new trial in the Trojan cose was argued before J udge Zane this afternoon. The motion defendant Tlie overruled. wss then requested that sentence be proinstead of nounced Mr. Denny, on behalf of the prisoner, made a lew remark staling that this was the first oflense of which the defendant hid ever been convicted ; that he had served four years in the late war and hail a family entirely dependent upon him for support. In view of these he hoped the court would give as light a sentence as would he consistent. Being questioned bv the court Trojan staled that lie was 41 vests of age, his familv consisted of a mother, wifls ami two children, that he had never leen charged with any oilence before and had serious provocation in this case.
