Show f "vi, t A'f .1 i i f V . . The Weekly entitle! Stockton, Utah, Sunday, February 27 1907. Vol. VI. Utah in a religious war. Certainly It Is not a spirit of patriotism or of love ft ir Utah that is the impelling motive behind the matter. Selfishness (which one agency in particular is so strikingly amenable to) Is sounded as tbe keynote of the governors personality. He is also attacked and this is made the basis of the attack because he has attempted to write artlclea for eastern magazines which hare given the governor's private views on the Mormon question. Of course, as governor the articles would carry more weight than they would do coming from a private individual. But a look at the. motive behind the attacks is not amiss. Cun that man lie called honest 'who is not strong in his beliefs? Can that man be called upright who shirks any duty, lomiiural or spiritual Is that man a good citizen who defaults when Ida party calls or his country' calls It la stated that Gov. Cutler Is a a ntau. We do not bglieve that is true. While the cry may be raised that lie did not volunteer when the call came to arms: while be may not have somdif giory on the battlefield, yet can a man not be a good citizen who helps build tip a state; who starts industries: who, by force of personality ami business acumen rises to the fore? Is not that man patriotic who will give up the quiet of .his home, ami consent, when asked, to lake public oflice. especially wlien taking that office means sacrifices, more or less, the giving up of the high ideals of life to accept the prosaic condlltous thrust upon him hy political office and political duties 1 But. the matter In a nutshell is simply an attack on religion. It is not on Governor Cutler nor. of any Individual on a question of ofllclal duty. but simply a desire to create a false sentiment against a certain religious body. Tbe harm lies In the untruths that are spread abroad; tbe harm lies In the fact that many earn eat men and women who are striving to make this a progressive city and Utah a progressive state, with old animosities relegated to tbe background, are baited in their missionary work, that of redeeming a state from the slough of untruth. The harm lies in the fact that the highest official in he state is, selected as a target, at who is aimed the shafts of a pen guided STOCKTON SENTINEL Published Every Weiluesday.
